I have a house with varying wall thicknesses to trim out inside and think I could use a planer to create varying jam extensions. Anyone have a favorite brand? Portability and price will be factors.

I bought a craftsman 12" for 250 - 300. I'm doing the same type of thing with it, trim work. Snipe is a problem with this one and I've heard it's almost impossible to get rid of, even with a better built model. I just cut the boards longer, plane them, and then cut the sniped area off. It's not a bad planer other than that, I've done some pretty good work so far according to the boss!

Tools & Shops magazine did a comparison of several brands of planers and jointers in the winter 2002/2003 issue # 160. You can order back issues by calling 800-888-8286. For a few dollars, you can find out all kind of stuff about several brands of planers.

Hello, I do not think it makes a lot of difference which brand you get as most, if not all, are made in six factories in Taiwan. The only difference is exterior sheetmetal and paint. You just need to look at Jet and Delta and Grizzly to discover the interchangeability. Choose the one you like for whatever reasons. Do check out Pawn Shops. They usually have a number of them, in good condition, for about 50% of new price. By the way, my own preference is Delta.
Hope this helps,
Joe

I've had a 12" (maybe a 12 1/2") Jet for 8 or 10 years. Been very satisfied, but I've nothing to compare it with; only one I've ever owned or used..... .

I really like my Grizzly 15' planer, but at roughly 500 lbs I don't think it meets his portability requirement. I've read some good reports about DeWalt's new portable planer.

I'm glad to find out you have all of this stuff. Sawmill and a planer, wow! Clear me out a space in your shop.

When one has lived as long as I have, one must have accumulated a few "things"; only so much food, adult liquid refreshment, etc., one can ingest. My poker buddies keep me from owning more "things"..... ...they all have families which I help to support.

I just bought a benchtop Ryobi 13" and it seems to work a lot better than my neighbors Dewalt, even he likes the Ryobi better. I got it on sale for $240.
