Welded iron strength?

Hi, y'all.
I need some welding advice. I'm about to start putting together a mount for an old pull-type plow I have, and I was thinking about welding it out of some scrap iron I have lying around. Do you think I'll get acceptable strength out of that, or should I break down and go buy some scrap steel? Reason I ask is that I've heard lots of folks talk about welding iron blocks, heads, etc., but I've not heard folks talk about welding on iron plow mounts, etc.

Thanks in advance,
Darren

If the project is worth doing, then buy steel and do it right. My 2 cents.

Darren, I will vote for using the scrap you have laying around, its probably already rusty and seasoned for the tough farm use. Just use 7018 rods so the welds will be stronger than the mild steel metals. 6011 welds don't seem to be strong enough to stand lots of abuse. If you need anymore ideas, I will send my mother n law. yours truly, goofus
