Hi Benj,

You got me on this one. I looked around on the AWS website and didn't find any refference to hardface electrode standards. I thought that in the late 80's or so there was a standard made.

From looking at Lincoln's website there must not be a standard and there still using the mfg's discription for hardface electrodes.

Mfg's like it this way as then you can't compare electrodes from one mfg to the other.

Hello T_Bone, That's the same thing I found. It is little surprising to me that no standard designation has been establish.
Guess I'll have to go to the various welding suppliers and get their list.
Thanks, Joe

Hi Joe,

Click on the link below and goto Linclons website then click on consumables then hardface and it'll give you a list of all the electrodes they carry and explain how to use them.

Hello T_Bone,
I was able to get a copy of a cross reference sheet put out by UTP Welding Technology. It appears to compare the various brands as they relate.
Thanks, Joe

I've never actually seen a hard surfacing rod with a "standardized" number like your 7018 or 6011. In the case of normal rods the first 2 or 3 digits are your tensile strength in 1000psi (ie 7018 has a tensile strength of 70,000psi)... the next digit is for the position the rod was designed to be used(ie- multiposition, flat only, etc...)and the final digit indicates the properties in the flux coating and wether it's an AC or DC rod. Most if not all hard surfacing rods are gonna fall outside these normal parameters. In the suppliers catalogs they are usually given a name such as Hardaloy, Welco 240 Ni-mang or something similar. The rod itself will usually be marked simply with the name and alloy used, like the Welco rod mentioned above, or simply with the designation for the alloy by itself, if they are marked at all. Like I said I haven't seen and don't know what all the suppliersd out there do, but this is what I've seen in my experience. Hope it helps.
