OT- wiring question

I know the best thing to do would be get an electrician but, I have a ceiling fan & light wired to wall switch, right now- wall switch controls all power to the unit & pull chain turns on light. I'd like to have seperate switches or at least have the wall switch turn on the light & be able to use the fan without the light on. What needs to be done? Can this be done with a single pole switch?

If the incoming power goes directly to fan/light fixture, and the wires going to wall switch are just a "switch leg" all you have to do is connect incoming "hot"(usually black) to one side of switch leg and "hot" of fan wire. Connect other side of switch leg to "hot" of light and both neutrals to incoming neutral(usually white). This will make fan independent of wall switch.LOL doorguy

Simple....leave the pull string for the light "on"...pull string for the fan "off".

Light switch then controls the light (whole unit but the light is the only item energized), when you want the fan to run, pull the pull string to start it up.

That's how i do mine anyway. Works with 2 fans i have in the house.

Get a fan with a wireless remote control.

They work great! (Until "not me" loses the remote!)

Brian..... ....each switch pole controls a function. Each function requires a wire. Your present wall switch is a SPST switch. one pole, one function. Your present wall switch has only 1-circuit....on. Your ceiling fan has a seperating function switch scheme, for fan only, lights only, or both.

To accomplish what you want will require new wiring to fan from wall switch and a different wall switch.

Besides the inconvience, what's so difficult with manually pulling the fan switch strings?..... ..respectfully, Dell

Thanks to all. My problem is I want to run the fan with the light off & the light is a long way from the door where the switch is located- seems like I always bump my shin or stub a toe on the way to the chain.

As Bob said above, get a wireless remote. I'm pretty sure the Hunter unit I have is universal, and it was pretty easy to install (of course I installed it in a Hunter fan, so that might have simplified things). A lot less expensive and easier than pulling more wires.

You can get a double switch that will fit in the same space as a single switch and uses a dual receptacle cover. You'd still have to run an additional piece of romex from the switch to the fan.

Have two fans ,one over bed Chain easy to get to,one in Sun Room one in sun room no so , Ran a14/3 with G, wire put bl wihe to light red wire to fan put fan switch above light switch left fan chaine there to control speed.has worked great
