Dual moving tables on jointer

I just bought a 6" jointer and it has no manual with it. What is the purpose of both the infeed and outfeed table being moveable. All the other jointers I have seen had just the infeed moveable. I would think that you would want the outfeed table to be at the same height as the cutterhead, as it is cut it would then ride on the outfeed table. If you lower the outfeed wouldn't it make your cut out of whack? Thanks for any help. Shane

It will cut a curve instead of a straight edge if the outfeed table isn't adjusted right.

The reason both front and back tables will move is if you want to use a set of cutters to cut molding with and can control the depth of cut. Also as was stated to be able to use cutters that were sharpened and become shorter. A knife setting gauge should be used to make sure all cutters are the same .

Hi Shane,

The outfeed table is rarely moved. Usually, knives are set from the outfeed table (not quite the same height- a little lower), wherever it's set. Probably the only time you'd want to move the table is if you replace very short many-times-ground knives with a new set. Adjustable outfeed tables come on the better jointers.

Don't forget to check that both infeed and outfeed are in the same plane. If not, you'll have to adjust it. Grabbing the jointer by the tables to move it is common, and often necessitates realignment.

My considerably larger jointer also has rack and pinion gearing to move both tables away from the cutterhead. Now that's something REALLY unusual.

Watch your fingers!

Is it to allow adjusting after sharpening blades which are then shorter?
