I'm thinking about buying a new Dodge with the HEMI engine. Does anybody have one? Any advice on them? Are they worth the extra $? I won't be towing very much, maybe a small camper 6 times a year.

John

Hey John, if you buy one, be sure it has the optional heated tail gate. Sure is nice to have a nice warm tail gate to push on in the winter time.
All kidding aside the best advice you can get is from towing company owners, or just start noticing how many Dodge tow trucks you see around.

Good luck Ben E.

I have to say, I was just giving an alternative model truck to a dodge with a hemi. I hadnt thought about it before but you are all probably right about the HEMI name being a sales booster. If I know most auto makers as well as I think, then they are all trying to just sell a newer crappier and overall more EXPENSIVE pile of metal. They just care about making money not making things work and last long. I'll go with the F-250 with the TRITON V-10 gas engine and the auto gearbox because, 1. I'm a redneck, 2 I like fords, and 3. FORD RULES, Now if only MACK made pickup trucks, then we would have it made. I like the Ford in my driveway the best. Its a 1940 and It still runs and drives. dont know how well, but I know it will go when and where you want it to.

I agree with Robert! Go with the Ford F-250!! Dodge transmissions keep falling apart.

I wouldn't buy one. I rode with a buddy that bought one the other day. If you nail the hammer from a dead stop you swear your head is going to fly out the window, but when it starts to go up threw the gears it just looses everything. He said the truck will hit 100mph and thats it and it takes a while to get there. I don't think it would be very good for towing. He gets about 11 miles per gallon so that isn't great either. Im not saying that they ain't a good engine I just think they are just relying on the "HEMI" name to make them sound good. Ohh yea, when you have a hemi it makes the towing compasity jump up and you have to pay more cause it makes the truck in a higher weight class.

I agree with you, they just used the name to sell the truck. Back when muscle cars were king if you had a hemi you had something! Today if you have a new hemi you have a truck with a regular engine in it with a set of hemispherical heads on it and a hemi tag slapped on it. The last great hemi I saw was a Keith Black 600 some odd cubic inch monster my neighbor built and raced.

In my opinion, they arent really worth the money, take a good look at the factory specs on the engine, they may have a nice number of HP but they get pretty crappy gas mileage. its like 10 or 15 MPG with a HEMI where you can get at least 19 -24MPG with a standard gas engine. MY best advice is to buy a ford F -250 with a V8 in it. you wont regret it.

I have driven Chrysler products for over 30 years. No more. Chrysler used to have the best warranty in the business. I found out, last year, they have the worst. Read their warranty CLOSE, and be sure you have a reputable dealer. Go to www.complaintstation.com and look up Chrysler, you may be surprised. I feel like I've lost a close friend!!

My buddy got one of the first ones and he used it to pull an enclosed snowmobile trailer with up to 4 sleds at about 8,000 feet elev. but most of the time now he uses his Dodge Cummins truck. I've ridden in the Hemi and driven it and it's got some good pull but for the money and the little real difference in pulling power I'd go with the 360 gas motor and 'tweak' it a bit...my 2
