I bought a new Dell around Thanksgiving time it worked 1 month until Christmas- New Years. I have been trying to get Dell tech support to help fix it with no luck they say they will call you back but never do. I think it needs a new modem. I do not recommend Dell at all. Anybody else have any problems with them. Are there any good computers or companies out there ??

Bought a new Gateway a year and a half ago.
So far the computer is fine...I never got the rebate I sent in.
And customer service does absolutely suck!
I don't want to speak to Abdual again!

My father got a new HP (low end walmart item) and it has got to be the cheapest thing I have ever seen. Doesn't even come with a windows disk.

Pretty much a disposable unit.

Sounds like everything is that way.

Hi Mike,

Dell is just like any other manufacturer. They build high end and they also build the junk to sell in quantity to the kids.

Like an old boy told me one time, "Which would you rather have, a $3 hunting dog or a $300 hound?"

Our company requires us to buy about 4 additional units a year and these machines have to work for a living; some of them havent been shut off in 12 years. We've learned over time to stay up in that $4500- $5000 range for reliability.

Oh, and we have one Dell. It sets in the corner as a backup unit.

Trying to help,

Allan

For what it's worth, at work we have about 25 Dell's and I have one at home that I purchased in April 2003. At work we seldom have a problem with any.

My home PC had a cooling fan failure but as it turned out Dell called me before I got around to reporting it. Seems they were having lots of premature fan failures in the model I got and decided to change them all at no charge. Of course, mine was still under warranty anyway. The tech brought the part and took just a few minutes to install it.

I haven't had any problem with the modem so far.

An APPLE a day keeps the PC/BS at bay.

Looks like I dodged a bullet without even knowing it! I ordered a new Dell last August and turned down the extra cost modem as I had one lying around. I did spring $20. extra for a floppy drive. I have had no problems with it to date, although I have to agree that getting a trial version of Roxio is BS!

Did anyone see 60 Minutes last Sunday? They did a piece on Customer service and Tech support phone lines. It seems that most of the large U.S. Companies use companies in India to handle their calls. They beam them over by satellite and are answered by Indian workers who have taken lessons on how to sound American on the phone and they all have American sounding "names" they use. I wouldn't be surprised did Dell did the same.It sucks to the tune of 400k jobs gone. OOPS, I mean "Outsourced Offshore". Oh Well, had to vent that... just my 2 cents...

We had to start getting nasty in our e-mails and conversations and I finally have a case number for a service call. They said 48 hrs. we should hear from someone to set up an appointment. We shall see ?

I haven't read all the replies but, my wife has a tax business here and uses Dells alot. She has had very little trouble with them and the little trouble she has had they were here to fix in one or two days. She leases the computers, maybe that's the difference. The one I'm on right now is one she bought out after the lease program a few years ago and it's been fine.

The Dell machines we get at work have, for the most part have done okay, except for the modems. Of the ones we have at the office (4 - all more than a year old), I have had to replace the modems in two of them. Both were replaced with a no-frills 3Com and have worked fine since, in spite of the grit and dust of a construction site.

My son, an officer in the Navy and an engineer tells me that HP is the way to go now. His job gives him a lot of experience with different makes.

My Dell works good, but they do have a problem with modems. They buy them in bulk and a huge percent of them are junk. You can buy a good modem for around $30 and it's not hard to replace. Just remove the other modem and boot the machine so it knows you have taken the old one out and then shut down and install the new one.

This is on a dell. 2yrs old. No idea about the new ones. 2-3 hours on phone to get into tech support. Once there the problem got fixed. No help at all if there is no dell warranty. Most of the software that I thought I purchased was try and buy. Big bucks for a sample. Aftermarket software better and cheaper. I think that those interns that are in the commercials are running the company.

I have had a Dell Deminsion 8200 for 2 years. All in all I think the computer is as good as any, but, Dell's tech support is as bad as it gets. I would never buy a Dell again for that reason only. If you can ever convince them what the problem is they will have you a new part delivered the next business day. The problem is getting to talk to someone that knows what they are doing. Best way is to tell them nothing on the computer will work, no power, not even a light will come on. Then they will send a repair technician with every part in your computer to repair it. He will be much easier to deal with than someone 5 time zones away that you can't even understand. Could go on all day about it but best put it behind me now. Terry G

He's right that's the way to deal with Dell Tech Support. At least once they determine it to be broken you can speak to an American.

I DON'T KNOW ABOUT DELL
BUT I'VE GOT A 2500$$$ GATEWAY THAT IS PIECE OF CRAP !!!!!
IF YOU TAKE IT IN , IT IS TWO WEEKS BEFORE THEY EVEN LOOK AT IT. THEN THEY SAY THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH IT.IF I HAD THE MONEY TO REPLACE IT I WOULD LIKE TO TAKE IT IN FRONT OF THE STORE , GET A BIG CROWD GATHERED ,AND THEN BRING OUT THE 20 LB. SLEDGE HAMMER ,AND HAVE SOME FUN BUSTING THE PIECE OF CRAP INTO A MILLION PIECES .THEN LEAVE THE PIECE OF CRAP LAY.
MY LUCK I'D GET THROWN IN JAIL FOR LITTERING

I guy did that very thing awhile ago here. He was charged and ended up in court. I belive they let him off with a small fine, but he sure got his point across to a lot of people at the store and in the newspapers.

I purchased this Dell L550r in april of 2000. It has been ok, only two mother boards, three modems, and I recently upgraded the brains. The problems were caused by lightning coming through the phone lines, so I am well pleased with it, compared to an Apple Mac. that we had over $4,000. invested in. That sorry thing never was worth a dime. I feel like Apple owes me $4,000. This was back in the 90s, and everytime we called, one of those foreign freaks answered that we couldn't understand. Maybe Dell should outsource to China, labor would be cheper, and Chianese tend to have a lower IQ than Indians, and the language shouldn't be any harder to learn. If I had an IQ high enough to understand someone with a high IQ, like the people from India, then I wouldn't need any help with my computer. I was going to buy a new Dell, but I think I will wait awhile. alvinnms

I currently own about 70 computers, 40 of them Macs. They're by far the cheapest and easiest to keep running over the long haul. When did you buy yours? There were a few Performa and PowerBook models around 1995-97 that were real dogs. I've only had to call Apple support a couple times, but the folks were accent-free Americans based somewhere in the country.

Dell's hardware is usually good quality, but I have to agree with the previous poster about support. A friend of mine spent weeks talking to someone in India who didn't know much about computers. They kept mailing here parts that weren't what she was asking for.

You either need to get a major phone problem corrected or get a serious surge supressor. You shouldn't have to replace any computer internals normally. After the first modem got zapped you should have invented in some protective hardware.

Alvin, we've got one of those Johnny Cash computers. You know, one piece at a time? Had it 4 years and if we keep the viruses out it works fine. MT Pockets.

John, we started out with Apples in the 80s, and I would still be with them if we had not got stuck with that rotten apple. It just ruined the whole bag for me. It was about 94 or 95 when we bought that A/mac. My oldest daughter is a professional free lance writer for the science community, with her own web site, and she used Apples for years, however she got away from them. About the lightning, we live on a hill that seems to draw lightning strikes. Would you believe that I have seeen lightning go through this house several times. I was telling a friend about it one day, and he was in disbelief when it suddenly came through. I have not had that problem in a long time, since Ms. Power Co.came through and reworked all the ground wires at the power poles. I don't know if that had anything to do with it or not. One day I was on the phone and it slapped the reciever out of my hand and 14ft over to the other wall. I am puzzled about what a Johnny Cash computer is. Thanks alvinnms

Alvin, Johnny Cash had a hit song about 30 years ago about a man who worked in an automobile plant. Every day he would take a piece of a car out in his lunchbox. Each piece would be for a different kind of car. But when he got it all assembled, it ran. Remember that song now? I believe this computer is called an IBM clone, but it has no recognizable name brands anywhere on it. Thanks. MT Pockets.

My neighbor bought a Dell and had nothing but fits with it and come to think about it alot of modem problems. He spent hours on the phone with Tech support before giving up and bought a Gateway. Last time I heard he was having problem with the gateway. Has a brother that twildles alot with his puters.

I just bought a Toshiba laptop that so far has been great. Too early to tell as it's only 4 wks old.

I have a CTX laptop that didn't have 250hrs on it before everything started going south. I haven't got it fixd yet but what a piece of junk so far. Monitor went out at 75hrs, under warranty, then the power supply, now a CD-ROM.

I built the son a Intel MB desktop over x-mass and so far he likes it great. Again too early too tell but seams to be humming right along.

I do like that XP home OS tho.
