Anyone know the age of this? I've had at least 30 years. This probably is not the place to post this but I did not know were else to look.

I did a "Google" search on the "Ray Socket Wrench" and turned up the manufacturer: Packer Specialty in Chicago. There is also a nice photo of a Ray set with about 40 sockets for sale for $165. Check it out.

Socket sets like this were made from approx. 1915 to 1950, judging from the looks of the box and logo, would say 1930s. These stamped sockets won't break much loose before spinning or breaking. "The Ray" logo? am guessing it was sold in a hardware store. In the 20s and earlier sets like this were in wooden boxes. Its nice to see *tools* discussed on the Tool board. John in Nebr.

In my shop I have a set like that belonged to my grandfather. This set is bigger and I don't know what the brand name is. My grandfather died in 1954 and he had been retired for many years. I would guess they go back to the 30s or 40s.

I would say it is pre-war but I don't know exactly what war that would be.

That would be the Napoleonic wars.

My father had asocket set something like that back in the 1930's, when i was a kid! It had a ratchet handle, with a square turning section that pushed thru the ratchet head to reverse the motion of it--but you had to take the socket off and put it on the other side to make it turn the other way. The sockets looked exactly like the ones in the picture. The maker's name escapes me. I'm not sure what happened to it. If I can find it tomorrow, i'll let ya know if it has a name on it! I have a more complete set, with extension, adaptors, ratchet, the box is 4 inches wide and 20 inches long. They belonged to my Great Uncle. I know they are 1930's or before. The name on the box is "Crecent"

That set should be worth quite a bit.

that is possible, never really give much thought about it. My Uncle gave them to me 30 years ago, worth more to me as a keep sake. Since he thought enough of me to intrust them into my care. Will someday pass them on to my kids.

Good idea. I have some small sizes myself, but not a set. Once in a while an odd one or two can be found at flea markets.
