lincoln welder engine identification

I need some help with identification of the engine in an old lincoln welder I just bought. All of the serial numbers on the welder's plate have worn off so I don't even know how to check the year. It has a flat head 4 cyl so I'm guessing a 50's model maybe. The engine runs but I need to put a new head gasket on (water in the oil - hope that is all to fix that) and rebuild the carb. If it helps get the brain gears moving, the carb is very similar to the Farmal-H that I have sitting in the yard. Mounts toward the bottom of the engine - drafts air from the side of the carb and sends it up to the intake. Also, it has a point type distributor. Maybe this is enough to point me in the right direction to identify what I have. Thanks for any input.

I have 2 lincoln gas welders...one is a 1948 and other is 1971 both have continental flat head engines..both have mags on them..have a kholer power plant has a flat heat continental but has a distributor in it..have nice day may god bless

I'm pretty sure the engine in our Lincoln SA 200 is a continental---flat head, four cylinder, with a carb set up similar to the one you described....
This particular welder is about a 197? model...

I finnaly cleaned enough grease off the welder yesterday to read SA200 on the front and found some block numbers. The carb had a tag on the back side so I'm in the process of locating a kit. Thanks for the help. Eric

It could be any one of several makes, but since you mentioned the similarity to a Farmall H, I'll guess that IF it is an IH engine, it would have to be a Cub engine. That's the only IH made tractor engine that had a flathead. You may be able to find one in your area to compare it to. IH did sell power units with Cub engines, I think they were the U1 model (not 100% sure though).

If the distributor comes up through the head then its a contintial F series.

The distributor sits horizontal between the carb and the governor on the side of the block - it is a Wico or wilco. Yall will have to bear with me - the welder is at the ranch about 1.5 hours north of here (the computer is here.)It looks like it is driven off the governor or a comon gear.Thanks for the help.
