Propane cuts good, and a lot cheaper, than acetelene. Go to any welding supply and purchase a propane tip, for your exsisting torch and rob the tank from your wife's barbecue grill, then you will be in business, if you have a pair of guages, hoses, oxy. tank. The propane tip is a lot easier to clean. No more rent for acetylene bottles. Cuts up to an inch thick with the small tip. I work with mild steel only, and leave other metals to the pros. I see professionals, such as guys that install mufflers, use torches without any kind of eye protection. They really have to be good, just to survive. My nephew was trying that trick the other day and almost put one his eyes out. It won't ever be the same. Flash back is something that I never was concerned about, but maybe I should be. Does anyone know a flashback victim? I own two oxy bottles that I can no longer get filled. Does anyone have a solution? thanks alvinnms

Filling O2 tanks- 1- dont take them to a dealer for the tank brand. They will tell you they are leased only and confiscate them. Go to a competitor, tell them the story. Mine had me sign that I owned them, then they hydrostat (if needed) then fill them..

Why can't they be filled? If they are out of date, the supplier should hydro test them, for a fee of course. The tanks have a date and a star, and possibly a "+" mark, stamped on the shoulder. The star is 10 years and the + an
additional 5 years. Example: My oxygen tank is stamped 8-1989 star. The next hydro test was done 4-1998, 16 months early. It could have been tested 8-'98. If I need a refill after 4-2008, it must be tested first. But the best thing to do is exchange for a full one that has several years before it requires testing. That way, you avoid the hydro test charge. I think it's about $15-$20. Be sure the replacement is marked "customer owned" and has no company name. You need to work it out based on your gas useage.

Thanks for your reply Slowpoke. There are only two outfits around that fill them and they don't want to be bothered unless you rent. The tanks have been tested time and again, and the last time they told me it was the last. I seldom use them anymore, but I do need one every so often. I have been thinking about making an adapter to connect to a friends oxy bottle and let them equalize. Do you think that would work.? Thank alvinnms
