OT Sanding Belt Failure

I have several new boxes of 3 X 21 inch sanding belts that I purchased about 5 years go. Tryed sanding some wood today and the glue joint on the belts fails after about 30 seconds. Some of the belts have lap joints and some have a piece of plastic tape and a butt joint. I tryed reglueing the lap joint with contact cement but they failed after about 2 minutes. I tryed useing shipping tape on the butt joint without success. Does anyone have any bright ideas as to glue these new belts back together.? I think tomorrow I'll try 2 part Epoxy and Gorilla glue. I dread to throw these belts away as I have several boxes of 10 each.. Thanks

Gorilla glue and 2 part epoxy glues aren't flexible. They'll fail with the first pass over the rollers.

I suspect a fabric iron on patch might hold though.

I have the exact same probles, except I have about 20 boxes of them that are old. I have tried everything. Nothing has worked yet. I did see something yesterday on a car show that had some 2 part glue that would hold anything. The stuff was great. Will try to find out and post later

try going to a flea market and see if you can find "German glue" I'll garuntee it will work !! Jim in N M

I had a lot of belts, did the same thing, just came apart. I layed it on age and moisture. Never did figure out how to successfully re glue them. I dont know if they are glued with epoxy or some kind of resin.

Yes guys, as an old retired Industrial Arts teacher, I know about the arrow and installing the belt. I'm going to try some clamps with the Epoxy today. Thanks.

I have not tried it, but I heard a good strong cotton cloth, maybe a good quality bed sheet/pillow case, saturated with hide glue will work to splice a butt joint.

My dad used to always dry them out in the oven at low temps prior to using them. Also they have to run in the right direction.

Moisture & humidity kills lap joints in belts. They are as sensitive to moisture as welding rods are.

I've had the same problem when I bought too many belts at one time. I tried to use contact cement on them (lap joint) and they worked a while for light duty. Now, I just buy the belts as I need them.

doubt you'll have any luck re-glueing your belts... the company I work for also manufactures sanding belts... our belts are butt joined with a special polyester tape and a special cement... the whole assembly is "set" in a huge hydraulic press under intense heat and pressure... after that, they cure for 24 hours before use. don't think you'll duplicate that at home!

Never had that problem. Are you sure you put them on the right direction? Pointing the wrong way will do that with the lap joints, the only kind I've seen. Should be a direction arrow printed on the inside.
