I was reading the post lower down about radiant floor heat and wondered if any of you have tried or heard about anyone heating with radiant heat with the liquid being pre warmed by using the sun to heat the liquid in some sort of a solar panel etc?

Hi Bob,

Here's a small system I made for using with a green house but could be used in any type of solar application. The collector pannels are very efficent. Add anti-freeze for winter use and isolate from the fresh water system.

You will need a add a differential controller and a pump for floor heat as the piping would be to restrictive for a gravity system.

You should be able to do it. Solar heating has a relatively short payback. You will need some control electronics to tell the system when to turn on and off based on both panel temperature and room temperature. I am moving towards a similar concept. Right now our home is passive solar heated - as well as woodstove and gas fired bolier with radiant floor heat. The basement is plumbed for radiant floor heat, but is not yet tied into the boiler. I am thinking of experimenting and connecting a couple of 4x8 ft panels to one of the three radiant floor loops and see how it goes. So far have been too busy to move on this project.

The big thing is you need a storage medium for the solar heat. The 4-5 inch concrete slab in our basement is just the thing. I live a few miles south of Lake Ontario near Rochester, NY. The temp right now is -11 degrees F. We only have 2-4 days per month of sun. If it is sunny today, even the passive solar aspect will get our room temperature to 76 degrees. I suspect in your location, solar heat will be much better. BTW, all our electricity is generated by a wind turbine and solar PV panels (for 3+ years so far).

I know of four homes here in SE Az that are solar radiant heated. They use a system of panels - pump and piping to heat the water in a buried tank. Then a sperate pump to move the water thrugh the piping under the concrete floor. The piping is about 3" and buried in pea gravel just under the slab. Of course here in sunny southern Az we have more sunny days per winter than most.

RJ: Where about in S AZ are you located? I have a daughter in Tucson. When we visited her over thanksgiving I saw a crop there that I was not familiar with. It had a rusty(or deep) red tassle on it. This was along I10 on the way to Phoenix.

I am in the Gila Valley near Safford Az. I beleive the crop you saw was milo, a small feed grain that is similar in protein as barley. It has a round BB like shape and kind of reddish to brown color.
