Gas welding 22 ga stainless

I repair big dishwashers and stick weld the big stuff with 308-16 3/32.I would like to try the thin [ 22 gauage ] with a torch.Has anyone done this?What size tip and what type of flux are needed? Sometimes people have cracked sinks that need repair also.ThankYou in advance for any help you can give me.

Hi John,

Yep you can but uses a small heat zone as SS distorts different that mild steel with no predictability. A 00 tip would work well with a very slight reducing flame. Should take about the same preheat time as Tig does so that means a low flame temp. Besure and use a SS wire brush to preclean to white metal. also preclean your filler rod with emery paper.

The sinks I think will distort too much if your not very careful and the weld is not on or near the edge. You could end up with replacing a sink.

Practice on some scrap and you'll see what I mean.
