Looking to put a overhead truck rack on a '91 3/4 Chevy with utility beds. I need it to haul , 16' lumber, 20' 8" purlins, 3' wide sheets up to 20'long. I have a welder and air compressor in the bed. I have a general idea how I want to do it, just want to hear how you did yours, don't want to say, Darn , why didn't I think of that. Thanks Greg

My idea of a good design would be to have no open ends on the square tubing on the sides or top. Have a friend that has one that when you get to going at speed...it whistles from the wind going by an open ended tube. He was about to get rid of it till I walked in the shop and got a can of spray foam insulation and quieted it for him. Fred OH

Hello Greg, A couple of suggestions. On the last two cross braces. Make them so they can be removed. By using square tubing, you can put tubing tabs that will fit into a receiver on the vertical post. Space the last two cross brace the same distance apart as the width of your rack. This allows for easy storage when you have to move something tall. (ie. Refgerator). Also put lots of loops for tying off ropes or hooking bungy cords. There is a large mechanical contractor that builds a rack for their trucks that is a great design. Email me, if you would like me to take some pictures of one of them and send it to you. Hope this helps. Joe

Hi Greg,

I use Jacks idea alot as it keeps from having to reinvent the wheel sometimes. I did build one out of 1x1x1/16 tube that didn't work well as the wind viberations will work harden the metal and the joints would break easy. 1-1/2 x 1-1/2 x ? tube won't viberate from the wind.

I TOOK A CAMERA WITH ME ON TRIP TO THE SUPLY HOUSE AND SNAPPED A FEW PICS OF RACKS ON TRUCKS IN THE LOT.I USED SQUARE TUB BECAUSE FOR ME IT WAS EASYER TO NOTCH AND BEND AND GET A BETTER FIT & MORE WELD ON 90* JOINTS.
