How is a sink measured

If your gonna drive 70 miles to buy a bathroom sink, how do you measure it first. When they have sink sizes where are the measurements taken. Already got the wrong sink to exchange. Do I measure the hole in the counter top or the out side of the lips of the sink?

Go to Kohler and American Standard web sites. Between the two of them they make about every size sink there is. They have complete specs too. This will let you know waht types will fit before you get there. Home stores stock their products.

I agree with all the suggestions. Just want to add: If the hole is already cut, better make sure the new sink will fill the hole.
If its a new bathroom counter/cabinet, better make sure the overall dimensions (lip) will fit, then cut the hole to fit the bowl. Take into consideration the front facing on the cabinet and the back of the cabinet as well-its gotta fit between the two.

P.S. find out how you attach it before you leave. Some sinks clamp in, The last one i was involved in installing was made of resin and was just 'glued' in with silicone caulk.

On our new home they just measured the outside dimensions of the basin itself - the part that would fit in the hole in the countertop. The lip was not really considered as sufficient cabinet space. If you have a tight fit I suggest getting both the inner dimension and the outside (lip) to make sure it would fit. The cardboard template is an excellent idea.

One last thought though, to size our sink we went to the Home Center stores with our biggest pot to ensure it was adequate for our needs.

How about making a cardboard cutout of the sink opening and carry that with you?
