I have had a low usage 310 Mcculloch given to me that doesnt run right, owner from new said it never ran right and I am on a mission to fix it. 1.Starts easy (believe it or not) 2. Idles only if set fast and the idle fuel screw is out a lot more than it should be like 3 or 4 turns. After it idles for maybe 10 seconds it slows down a dies. Anytime I try to set idle speed down to normal levels it dies no matter how the mixture screw is set 3. When cutting the power comes and goes. I ordered and installed a kit in the ZAMBA carb, all the openings in the carb seem to be clean and there is plenty of flow from the fuel line. Do these symtoms sound like an air leak and is there any easy way to check that?

IF YOU THINK IT IS SUCKING AIR SPRAY SOME STARTING FLUID IN THE AREA YOU THINK THE LEAK IS IF THERE IS A LEAK THE FLUID WILL BE SUCKED IN AND BURN AND YOU WILL HEAR A CHANGE IN IDEL SPEED.

if the saws been sitting a long time the "seals" may be shot,, one way to check them is when the saw is idling tip it on its side and if the saw speeds up or slows down then they probably are gone. with bad seals adjusting the carb is impossible.

You might want to check if the spark arrestor screen has been crushed or blocked. Or maybe the exhaust fins on the muffler damaged.

Checking for an air leak involves removing both the carb & the exhaust muffler & blocking both ports with a plate & rubber gasket.

The crankcase is pressurized at 3-5 psi using a fitting threaded into the sparkplug hole. A soap/water solution is brushed on the exterior gasket joints & both crank seals.

I don't work on the McCulloch's, but if it was an older Homelite, I would just replace the crankseals as this normally solves the erratic running problem.

Good Luck!

Butch, If all else fails, replace the case gaskets and inspect for a burr where it meets the jug. I had a Mac 10-10 one time and we tried everything to get it to run right, even down to a new carb. It was the gasket between the jug and the case and also had a crank seal that was leaking.

I had an old Mac, didnt use it much at all, ended up replacing all the fuel lines. Old ones were like jelly.

If the gas is fresh and the carb is as clean as you can get it, then yes, it sure could be an air leak. Usually, air leaks happen when the fuel lines or the primer bulb get cracked. Look very closely at the two. I just replaced the primer bulb on a trimmer cause the trimmer would hardly ever start. That primer bulb costed $3. Good luck!!!!! !

All good advice. I would also suggest checking the fuel filter in the tank, it may have accumulated some "varnish" if it has sat in fuel for a long time.
