I am replacing the flywheel starter ring on a 1960 D-14. I think the old ring may have been installed backwards. The book I have says to install the beveled side to the rear. One side is beveled and the other is notched. I am not sure which side the book thinks is beveled. Any info would be appriceated.

Thank You

The bevel they refer to is the egde of the tooth where it engages the starter gear. It lets it engage smoother. The bevel should be toward the starter. The old ring may have been turned over.I have turned ring gears over when they had a bad tooth or wear and the owner had no money for a new ring. A little grinder time will bevel the teeth right quick. Not quite sure what you mean by notched.

That is what I thought, but the ring I have is not beveled on the teeth on either side. I plan on giving them a champher before installation. The notch is on the I.D. The flywheel has a diameter where the ring seats, then a larger diameter which matches the notch in the ring. It is like a boss that would set the depth of the ring on the flywheel. When installed the way the old one was the ring sticking out past the machined surface of the flywheel.

Built that way the ring gear is not reversable. As you can see the notch controls the posistion of the ring on the flywheel.
