alright here is my problem i have a 1987 ford f150 that had a 351w and c6 tranny....that motor blew and not i am trying to put in a early 80's 351m engine that had a c6 tranny in it... i got the engine in but the bell housing on the tranny is different than the one the M came offa...but here is the kicker...that bellhousing isn't removable on the new c6 trannys like on the older one so i can't just swap bellhousings... would anyone have an idea if its gonna be as simple as just swpping trannys or is there gonna be more...?? has anyone dealt with a siliar problem?? thanks for any advice in advance

When it comes to Ford, never try to change from the oem engine

first let me say ive tried it all in your situation first off the yoke for a fmx and a c-6 have diffrent splines. second the fmx had two diffrent tail shaft lengths. third the mount for the x-member will be in a diffrent spot. now all is not lost, if you have a long wheelbase 4wd then you can switch the yoke and might be lucky enough to get away with it. did you change your engine stands as the m mounts are farther apart and back so you can get the radiator in. also you will need to check and be sure that the water pump exits at the right side so that your water pump will hook up. your transmisson lines will also have to be rerouted for the c-6. in my opinion, if you can find one, a bell housing swap would be better because the c-6 uses so much h.p. {about 60}. also you might get lucky and have a yoke on the rearend that can be changed to make up the diffrence in driveshaft length. also if you have ac you will have to change the compressor hook-ups so that it will work. the w uses a round compressor and the m uses a square one. the crankshaft has a nasty habit of wearing out in the m. the c-6 from a car has a higher low gear band than one in a truck so it will kill your power on take-off and shorten transmission life under a heavy load if you use it for mainly pulling and your transmission is probably auto o-drive so you will need one from a similar year truck to get the right hook-ups for the electronics.
in closing if it were me i would find a H.O. 351 w and change that rear-nd to a 3.08 or a 3.25 or i might even go to a 3.55. Ford had a bad habit of putting 2.72 or 2.79 rears in trucks to make gas mileage for granny going to town. it sounds like you want to make it pull good. believe it or not you probably will increase your gas mileage from the 14 mpg your lucky to get now to around 16 to 20 depending on tire size. sorry for the long reply but i just wanted to help

If memory serves me right, most of the 351W came with an FMX transmission. Not fancy but reliable.

Since that truck body was available over the years with almost all of the combinations people have mentioned here, any of the combinations should work provided you have all the parts from a donor truck to mate the engine and transmission you have with the truck you have.

A Hollander Interchange Manual (ask a salvage yard if they are still available) would be REALLY helpful. That would tell you what parts mix and match.

351m and a 351w are different,,should be able to change the tranny to the one from the donor vehicle, unless you are doing a 2 wheel to 4 wheel swap,,,then some changes may need to be done, like the tail shaft ...Jim

I had a 4wd ford truck with a 351m that the trans went south on me, I had a good c6 that come out of a Lincoln Town Car with a 460 in it.I had to change the tail shaft for the transfer case.I am no transmission man, but between the two, I come up with one good one. That was 20 years ago and I don't remember exactly what we did ,but it was not that difficult.

I would bet the transmission on the early 80's 351M is not a C6 as I dont think any of the C6 transmissions had a removible bell housing. I suspect a Ford trans with a removible bellhousing is a FMX if the main body(center part) is castiron or C4 if it is all aluminum.
Also is the old trans from a car,van or pickup. It must be from a pickup and then 2 or 4 WD drive is different. Can be rear mount, driveshaft, spedo drive, and linkage differences. look before you leap.

Jon H: you're right,C6's never had a removeable bellhousing. He must be thinking about a fmx or C4. C4 the bellhousing bolts on from the inside of the bellhousing and the FMX it bolts on like a 4 speed with 4 ears on the outside.

The 351 M bellhousing pattern is shared with the 400 M, 429, and the 460. The 351W bellhousing pattern is shared with the 302. Basically a big vs small block problem. The 390,352, 427, and 428 also share a pattern.

Find a C-6 to fit your motor, and be sure the tailshaft housing is the same length as the original in your pickup, or is this a 4X4? Be sure the output shaft is the same diameter and same number of splines. OR... find a bare C-6 case that fits your block, and switch the guts over to the other case. That's really not that tough if you have a good shop manual, and are careful.
