around here the traditional lincoln tomestone 225 amp buzzbox seems to be the welder most farmers and handymen have, my father had an ac 225 lincoln that he bought used over 30 years ago and it still worked great when we sold it and bought a 225 lincoln ac/dc machine, still basicly the same as the old lincoln buzzbox. the newer one seems lighter so i wonder if they have cheapened them up over the years, and they seem to have gotten to be pretty expensive new also. i was just wondering if there is anything by hobart or miller in the same class as the lincolns that is a better machine. reason i ask this is that there is a possibility i may be moving and the welder i currently own is a lincoln idealarc that is rated for over 500 amps and weighs as much as a small car, not realy worth hauling it if i move since it would be about 1200 miles. i might talk my dad into trading that for his little lincoln, but he realy loves his little lincoln so most likely i will end up buying a new welder in the 200 amp range. thanks for any ideas guys

Have a friend that is in his 80's now. One day I was at his shop which has numerous welders of all types and brands. He does a lot of welding. On this day he was changing the mounts on a backhoe bucket and using the old old lincon 225. I ask why he chose that machine over all the other choices. His answer was that all the others combined would not add up to the 225.

Dang!!! Why do I always read a post like this the day after I sell a Lincoln 225? Only kidding but I did buy one at a flea market last spring. I told the owner that it was worth more than $65 if it was a good machine. He said it was good...he bought it for a trailer project and it had set around for years. I lifted it and no aluminum windings in it and looked as new. I left and came back later and still same price...so I bought it and I did put wheels and handle bars on it and yesterday I sold it for $100 to a good friend. I use an Airco BumbleBee AC-DC machine in the shop and didn't need another welder but know how good the AC-225's are. Fred OH

if you plan on buying something in the range like you have - lincoln still is as good as any. the idealarc 250 ac/dc still have the copper windings and weigh a about 300lbs. HOWEVER , if buying look at an "inverter" type. lincoln, miller have great ones. 300 amp machine will also run mig (bare and flux core wire)), tig, carbon arc gouge, and they weigh 60 to 70 lbs. do cost more but something to consider. have 2 at school and can verify that they are durable.

The inverter type of welders seem ok. However there will be more failures in them because of their more complex nature. The simple old copper wound transformer types of welders cannot be beat for durability and long life. I still have an old early 50's 180 amp buzz box that works great.

I think it's a bit out of the price range, but the Lincoln Invertec V350 has the most output amperage available in the 220v 1ph. range. I love mine. But other than the machines listed, the old Hobart TR250, was sold to Thermal Dynamics, and they are still making them, a real solid machine as well. But in all honesty, I wouldn't give up the 500amp machine that's already paid for, the little 225 would be a real chore to use. JMHO

Yes the newer welders have a good amount of aluminum in them where the older ones were all copper. I have older welders, Forney (2) and a Lincoln AC180T buzzer. I just like them better, they probably don't weld any better than a newer one but they sure weld every bit as good. Where are you located? I may could help find a home for your Lincoln...like in my shop.

im in northwest connecticut, nothing is definate yet more or less just bouncing ideas around at this point but if your nearby and interested in the lincoln we could possibly work something out, its a great machine just bigger than i need most of the time, and too heavy to move easily

Hi Market,

If it's an older Idealarc you will be sorry you got rid of it. They had one of the best stable arcs on the market, yuk yuk...

About the only finer machine made was the copper wound Lincoln Pipeliner.

AL wound x-formers have a differtent arc that can't compare to the CU wound machines.

yea it is a nice machine, but i cant see myself hauling it all the way to georgia if i end up moving, and i most likely wont be doing as much fabrication and stuff then anyhow,so i think a normal welder would do ok for me.
