Just rigged up an electolisis(sp?) setup. I've got some rusty sheetmetal cookin in there right now.15 gal of solution with an anode of 1/4 x 10" x 16" steel, running at ten amps.Would somebody have an educated guess as to how long I oughta cook this? Just lookin' for a base time so to speak.

Foz,

I set up a de-rusting tank last summer. I was running 5 brace (drill) bits through overnight (turning once). A mounting bracket off of a Jeepster I had to put back in for a second night (mostly because the anode couldn't "see" the rust inside a cavity). The second night I added a pin anode (nail) dangling inside the cavity.

The most important factor in how long it takes seems to be line of sight. The rust needs to have a clear line of sight (preferably perpendicular) to the anode. Cavities need to have a pin anode hung down in them.

If you are running 10 amps, you are most likely either shorted somewhere or making alot of oxygen and hydrogen by splitting water. You may want to switch your charger to 2 amp setting. I found that the 10 amp setting did not speed things up, but created more gas and a lot of heat.

Also make sure that you have good ventilation as the hydrogen/oxygen combination is explosive!

Good luck. Have fun. I did.

Cliff

Don't know about the actual time , but you most likely won't over clean it. Since the simplified theory of this is returning the oxide to metal form, when it finishes it is through,. Left some metal in my vat once for a week and it showed no signs of overdone. I would guestimate that at that current probably 12-14 hrs would be enough. Pull it out and when there is a black coating over all the metal in my vat, it is pretty well finished. Hot water and dish soap, and a scotchbrite pad seem to do the best job of removing the black residue. Wear your rubber gloves, as the black stains the hand. You need to get some sort of rust protectant on it as soon as you get it dry to prevent it from re-rusting. Gene Davis
