Since no one else mentioned it, I will. Certain "trojans" that lurk in innocent pictures, etc. contain small .exes that when launched, will spend every second of every minute trying to do their evil work. I just uninstalled a trojan that was consuming 67% of my processors capacity trying to dail up the internet and send the the keyboard strokes to an email address. The computer ran slow and the harddrive was constantly spinning due to this. Food for thought for everyone: This trojan was instructed to disable every anti virus and several firewalls, including zone alarm, microsoft, mcAfree and at least three dozen others. It then tried to send the info over the internet. Every password to every site visited and of course, credit card numbers are then sent overseas. The only thing that saved this computer was that it does not have broadband hookup or auto dial, otherwise Poof! no security whatsoever.
So if your computer is acting funny and you use it for shopping on the internet, get it checked out!

Kevin, it seems to be ok today. For the last month or two, every time it was started it complained about a w32 blaster worm, and Norton wanted permission to kill the thing, after clicking about 20 times ok the thing would disappear only to reappear at the next start, then after rekilling it, up pops a pipedlg. dat. note pad that has been annoying me for a good while, I guess it crawled out a hole the worm chewed out. I have been on the Dell site, and I am still trying to find someone with the same problem. Have a Happy New Year. Alvin n ms

Link

Alvin, try this link on the w32 blaster worm.
Or just go into the symantec.com web site and you can find other virus info there. Brother had similar situation a few months ago and did require some finangling to get it out of the system, for some reason on his, I think it got by the virus program he has.

I agree that Symantec is a good place. It had step by step instructions to remove the trojan. I was able to short circuit it, but the little .exe still trying to get out, so it is hiding somewhere in the registry.I have yet to try Easycleaner to erase this particular bug, but it is great for getting rid of shortcuts to nowhere and other garbage leftover in the computer registry.

Alvin: If you can check and see if you have maybe a seagate HD, let me know and I can send you a place that will let you check the hard drive on line. Seems a lot dont know but a lot of HD are guaranteed for 5 years. I found out the hard way.
Sometime when you buy a computer, you get I think either 90 days, maybe a year warranty. If it is a bad HD, the Comp. manufr. replaces the HD for you at a cost if it is out of their warranty, but if you call the HD manfr, and can prove date of purchase, they may replace the drive free , but if you cant DIY then you pay labor. I jabbered a lot so hope this is not to confusing. Also you might run a disc scan in DOS, not windows, takes longer but is more thorough, then a disc cleanup and a defrag, I do the last 2 items in windows. On the desk top, if you punch ctrl, alt, del one time only, there should be a box come up showing what is running in the back ground. Some of the stuff is necessary.

Hard drives are pretty simple to install in the case, its the programming of the new HD thats a PITA. I installed my last seagate HD but #1 son came in and programmed it. Seems he used the original compaq set up disc for that part, as everything was as it was new a few years ago.

First thing I'd do would be to run error-checking and disk defragmentation. Double-click My Computer, right-click on hard drive (usually C:), select Properties, then select Tools, then select Check Now. If files have gotten broken ("corrupted" in the computer-weenie world), your operating system may be trying to open or close one that's damaged. The error-checking might fix the problem (and then again it might not, but it's your best bet). Since files aren't always stored in complete entities, disk defrag will speed up a hard drive if lots of files are stored as disconnected pieces (fragments).

Someone mentioned "groaning" noises. If a hard drive makes "groaning" noises, it has nothing to do with memory. It's usually a sign that it's wearing out. (They DO wear out, ya know?) Once it starts making noises, it may last quite awhile longer. Or it may not. Hard drives are cheap these days. When/if a drive starts making noises, the question of whether it should be replaced now or later kinda depends on what a person is willing to lose.

HTH .. YMMV :-)

If its making a lot of growning noises , it possible that you might need more memory.

I have a CD player which does the same thing. I'm curious to see what others have to say.

Sounds like maybe you un-installed a start up program and all the pieces weren't un-installed. The puter is searching for the missing parts of the program that was suppose to start up when the computer was put on.

You might try downloading and running a personal use (FREE) version of AdAware. It will search for spyware and malware that may be messing up your computer.

I installed AdAware. It quaranteened 126 items. I think that I accidently deleted the file with my defrager. Is there anyway to get it back? I have an array of windows 2000 CD rom disc. Thanks to all and have a happy new year. alvinnms
