Allan said he had problems with snow accumulating on the dish. I have a cover that I purchased from a local dealer that keeps the snow off. I do not remember the price, but it was not very expensive. Around $20 I think.

I just dont know, but I heard of a heating element someplace?? Also some satellite guy told me to tie one of those non-degrading garbage sacks over the dish? Never tried it. Heavy rain or big ole black southern clouds will interrupt mine. I'd just like to reposition mine on the side of the house under an eave, might hep some.

thanks for all the responce to my inquiry. it seems that the dish network system has a slight edge over direct tv from the comments received. i am especially interested in rfd tv. i pobably won't use it for internet service now, unless it considerable cheaper than what i am using now. thanks again and have a great christmas.

Hi Charles,

I've been using Dish Network for many, many years now.

After we incorporated, we started running all our uplinks from the satellite dish as well.

We now use one dish for TV/Internet, and two more for just Internet uplinks (both directions via satellite).

The local telephone co. is making noises that they are going to be running fiber optic out to us rurals; I'll believe it when I see it; in the meantime, we need the speed & capacity of these dishes.

The only problems we have encountered is with heavy wet snows; then it is up on the roof to clean the dish periodically.

Allan

We had Dishnetwork then switched to Directv. Liked Dish network alot better. The system is more user freindly. I found support from both companies to be poor. Directv drops channels for no reason, like RDF-TV. Just wish I could get local channels. They just aren't offered in my area.

Everyone keeps telling me that, but when I tune to 379 I always get some silly rhinestone clad tele-evangelist telling me his Porsche payment is late and to send money? I think DTV is stiffin' me on that one.

Had directv for probably 6, maybe 7 years. So I cant tell you a difference, but #1 son had dish and for some reason changed to directv. Never asked him why. He has good reasons for everything. Now you can get free installation, no muss no fuss. We installed mine but thats when they first came out and were about 650 bucks. You can get replacement/extra RCA receivers now if needed for 29.95 each.

I have dishnet, the advantage to it is you can get RFD-TV, with farming and tractor shows. Unless something changed direct tv dosn't offer it. Also went with Sat. Inernet. Boy I'm interneting now. Went from 26.4 kbps to 11 mil bps.

Direct TV does offer RFD-TV now, but you need the newer style dish. My parents have had direct tv for a while now and the canot get RFD with their older dish, but I get it with mine. There is an explaination why on the RFD TV web site.

I'm really interested too. We have cable modem for high-
speed Internet, but we despise our provider (USAMEDIA - these guys are baaaad), want to go to satellite Internet. Is it possible to connect two computers to the same satellite Internet connection? Is this wireless or do they have to run a cable between the PC and the dish?

Bill, I have Directwav sat internet. You share the connection from the computer the sat is plugged in to. The sharing between the two computers ca either be wired or wireless. You can at that time share info on either machines hard drive(s), printers, etc.

You can connect them with a router, either wired via cat.5 cable, or wireless with a wireless router, and ethernet card setup. Wired is a lot less headaches. Linksys makes a good set up, and has decent help line support. Watch the satellite hookup box and be sure they dont fool one off on you that has to have special plugs from it to the router. If they do, think $$$$, know for sure about that set up. They also have a 600 series reciever/transmitter setup out that is not supposed to require a phone line for initial set up, no faster speed than the 300&400 series though.

Hey Kraig -
Is the internet service pretty good? I have Dish and was thinking of getting it. Currently have 28.8 dial up due to local phone system constraints. Thought of satillite service but was informed it was unreliable and spendy. Could you elaborate a bit more?
Thanks!

We have a local wireless set-up. Works great. Costs $49.945/mo, which is less than DirecTV & don't need a phone hook up for the uplink. Has been much more reliable than thye dial-up I had out here & incredably faster too!

Hi Shep,

What you might consider doing is upgrading your puter system as I just bought a new Toshiba laptop as my desktop and laptop took a dive because of hardware failures.

About 3 times as fast on web page load and downloads. I'm on a 56k ISP but 30 miles out of town so only get 28.4 at the best.

I did own a direct tv system, lightening took it out so I replaced it with a Dish network system. There really isn't any difference, they both offered the same programming packages, subscription rates are competitive, and the reception is the same. Go for whichever one offers the best deal when you are ready to buy.
Also, if you are at all handy, you can install either system yourself, just be sure to get the installation kit.

Have direct tv for about 7 years. No real problems, only weather, but this is the WNY snow belt!. I went for the local channels and RFD-TV came with it. 2 bucks more a month, new dish and installion was free. Still about 40 bucks with my extras.
