Will the tank regulator fail due to cold weather?

Tank pressure set at 150 psi. Turned it on and it failed to shut off at 150#. The pop off valve released the pressure down to 100#, sounded like a jet engine. I turned off the power, and haven't tried it again. It's a T-30 5hp motor.

Any suggestions appreciated.

Check the pressure switch contacts. Usually the contacts are melted closed when a compressor fails to shut down. You might consider a heavy-duty pressure switch if this is the problem. Furnas sells one that is good for 28 amps. Otherwise, you need a magnetic motor starter.

I have a similar IR compressor that lives outside under a roof. No problems with mine down into the teens, other than starting when cold. Did you look at the switch?

You may have ice in your pressure switch. (Or unloader valve, if it is gas powered.)
