propane heater

I have a 60,000 to 100,000 propane ready-heater in my uninsulated shop hooked to a 100lb bottle.I can't run it no time before the fumes make me shut it off. My kerosene heater is fine. I thought propane would burn cleaner.

Anytime you run a heater that size in a confined space you will get fumes, headache and possibly worse. those heaters were made to be used in a wide open space with plenty of combustion air. Also a 100lb cylinder will not vaporize 100,000 btu for very long in cold weather.

it sounds like the heater may be set up for natural gas instead of propane plus is it a vent free or not i've run vent free's with no problem and work with propane heat everyday so you have a problem those are the first things to check

Sometimes it is not a problem with the heater, itself.

However, when doing some things in a shop, or house that has an open gas flame, like the gas stove, various agents like cleaning fluids, solvents, even interior painting, etc. when used by themselves are not toxic, until, their vapors or fumes pass over an open flame. Then these harmless agents can become harmful.

Had this problem sime time ago. Sprayed "GLADE" room freshener in the house last winter. Set off all kinds of alarms. Hope this helps :})

Rick: All boils down to "Need ventilation" I got a kero heater I use once in a while. I cant use it and work with it running, gasses me out.

If it is not set up for propane it will have a n orangish yellow flame to it.The flame should be a bright blue color.Make sure the regulator on your propane tank is putting out the right pressure too.(11-13)" water column or about 6.5 oz.I do propane service work for Amerigas,so this is not just a guess.
