Any opinions on what is the best heater to make the shop comfortable in winter? Propane, electric, etc? My preferenece would be an old wood stove, but I am looking to move and don't want to install a flu. I don't want to go an arm and a leg for the fuel, rather put a little extra in the heater and use cheaper fuel. Don't really know which way to go. I have about 500 sq ft with a high ceiling. Not looking for a sauna, just want to take the bite out of the air.

Check the paper for a used corn stove. I have several that I have bought for a song and use 1 to heat my shop.( use the others to heat my home) Envirotec is the Brand I am using. Heat a 40X56 shop ( well insulated) with about 1 to 2 bushels per day depending on how cold and windy it is. With this stove I have been able to burn corn ,wheat, or rye which ever was the cheapest.

Go gas you won't regret it.You could heat that area easily with an unvented infared walll heater. The problem with vented heaters is that alot of your heat goes up the flue pipe.New unvented heaters are 99.9% efficient and have great safety features built in.My 2 Cents.

For those short jobs What I have found is one or two 1000 watt dual head halogen work lights on a stand works well you can see what you are doing and be warm at the same time. Works for me

insuation is the key factor in savings. If you spend time out in the shop you need a vented system. There are a lot of portable heaters, but my preference is an overhead vented gas heater with fan and thermostat. With the price of gas increasing? Well.. I have a shop, insulated well and use an overhead electric heater with fan. If I am not out there working I just set it on about 45 deg. Fast warmup will come from the O/H gas htr tho. An old trailer furnace will work also if you have the room, and can get the right up or down flow model. Whichever will work for you. Whatever you choose, I highly recommend it be vented.
