greetings. my poulan 2150 (which i bought used for $25) has stopped pumping oil to the chain. checked the lines and they are clear. assume it's the pump. problem: how do i remove the clutch assembly (need some type of special tool?) in order to remove the bar mounting plate to remove and re-install a new oil pump? thanks for the help!

It's fixed! sorry about the delay. when buying the oil pump kit locally at sears i asked the repair guy in the shop about removing the clutch assembly and he recommended the cord-in-the-sparkplug-hole and using a spanner wrench he had gotten from Snap-On. it was christmas eve and he actually lent me the tool without even asking my name or anything. it took a few tries to get it loose but it worked. i also needed to replace the the clutch assembly drum with the bearing and had to order that from the mainland. finally got it all together a couple of days ago and it works just fine again. thanks for all your help! by the way, i ordered the part from mike at partsangel.com. he was friendly, helpful, has really low shipping fees, and has really good prices including $7 chains for my 16" saw. check it out if you need something.

thanks for the suggestions so far (as of december 23). i won't be getting around to dealing with the saw until after the holidays, but i want to thank those who have contributed so far and welcome any additional suggestions or ideas about the problem and how to resolve it. i just kind of assumed that the oil pump had gone bad and needed to get the kit to replace it, then ran into the spinning clutch situation. i'd also like a clarification of the fuel filter removal suggestion. is there any other fuel filter besides the one in the gas tank? since the engine was running quite nicely with no hint of fuel line blockage, i'm not sure how that could relate to lack of oil for bar/chain. did you mean the oil filter in the oil tank? thanks again to all.

My method is to remove the starter cover, put a wrench of the proper size on the flywheel nut, and get something or other to hold the clutch and turn it with. this is my little trick to get clutches off with. I'm pretty sure poulan clutches come off when turned clockwise on a non-rotating crankshaft. I my be wrong, so please dont blame me for any damage that may come of this technique, after all you did decide to take my advice.

If this is one of the ones that has no nut to turn, then there is a little tool that has two pins sticking down and they catch on the clutch and you put a wrench on that, but since you dont have one here is the easy way to do it. Pull the spark plug, put a length of cotton rope or other soft cordage down the hole leaving enough to easily pull it back out. Then find you a big punch, put the saw on something solid, like the floor, position the punch on the clutch and strike with a hammer in the direction you want to turn it. It should turn loose, might take a good lick or two but it should come off. I am not sure the direction, it might say on the clutch, like mine says off and an arrow indicating counter clockwise. I hope this helps you to get it off. post the out come if you dont mind..

could be your fuel filter; i've seen them block flow. Pull the filter off & run it w/o bar & chain. remember it wont oil at idle, only when revving it up.Oil will come out the little hole above the bar studs.

bob, fuel filter hangs on a small hose in the fuel tank. every saw i ever saw had a separate tank for the bar oil..i don't see the connection.
