Any opinions on a new 1/2 or 3/4 corded hammer drill. Had a Black and Decker which burnt up. Also toasted my old Walter Mini grinder any suggestions on that.

regards

rod

I agree with Fred, Milwaukee makes the best 4 1/2" grinders. My only beef is that the new models are a handful, and I wear extra large gloves. Gotta be tough for anyone with smaller hands.

Rod, there are a lot of good mfgs. out there. I have had all kinds of hand powered tools. The best one I ever saw (inside where it counts) is a Porter Cable. In their jigsaw all the slides were heat treated steel and needle bearings everywhere. Makes me as a machinist appreciate them. Some mfgs make a home owner quality tool which is in my opinion of poor quality. Don't go this route without expecting surprises. I personally like the red tools best. (Milwaukee brand) In all my years, I have only had one failure in their little right angle grinder and it was a ball bearing. Not made by the company. L8R----Fred

Fred , I agree with you on the porter cable being very well built. I have many Metabo power tools. If you were to hold a metabo tool up next to a porter-cable tool , you will find out that they are identical. They are the same tool with different lables. I would not hesitate to buy any of these tools. They have never let me down. They are smooth running , powerfull , well balanced tools. I had forgotten to mention that I use these tools every day of the work week. Sometimes on weekends.

Hilti !!!!!
Another hammer drill designed for concrete drilling. That's what we use at the factory where I work.

I was lucky enough to be able to borrow a Hilti the other day, and it was really a nice machine.

Hilti is definitely the way to go if you are planning on borrowing one from a friend. On the other hand if you actually want to purchase one, you'll find that they come pretty steep. I think the one that I used was over $700.

I have an SDS bit hammer-drill by Bosch (11224 VSR). It's got plenty of power for drilling anchors, etc... in concrete and stone. List price is about $250.

SDS bits have a different shank, and are designed for hammer-drill applications.

Ditto here. I have had the same drill for years without a problem.

And that makes three. I have done horrible things to my Bosch SDS hammer drill over the 10 or so years I have had it and it still works perfectly!
