Hey guys, I'm back with an honest to goodness expert opinion on where you can set the dial, to check backlash in a differential. I wrote Currie Enterprises the other day and asked if they could help out with an answer. For any of you out there that don't know who Currie Enterprises is, they are one of the premier builders of custom axels, differentials, etc in the US. I've provided a link for anybody that wants to check them out. I cut-n-pasted their reply in full which also includes the question I asked. Just so ya'll know I'm not actually so rude as to not say "thank you" when I write asking somebody for a favor, there was more to the origional email I sent than this. This is just the part of my origional mail he sent me back with his reply. So, here it is.... OK, showed the question to the guru.... Can you measure the backlash in a ring and pinion setup from anywhere on the ring gear you want, ID, OD, middle, wherever, and still get the same reading no matter where you set the dial. If you or somebody in the shop that does the setups on ya'lls gearsets can answer that with a definitive YES or NO, that's, all I need. -- And he said Yes - anywhere on the gear as long as you keep the point consistent it really doesn't matter. Thanks. As a mechanic this tells me what I kept saying, that as long as you set the dial right it's gonna read the same clearance each time, no matter where on the gear you place it, ID, OD, or the middle. In other words as long as the dial is right it's gonna always give the same reading, the only thing that's gonna possibly make a difference is human fallibility in setting the dial. This is gonna be true no matter what instrument your measuring with, or what you happen to be measuring. Take care all, and I look forward to hearing back from any others out there that have done anymore searching or experiementing on the subject.
