I would like ya'lls opinion. What is the better chainsaw, a Stihl 290 farm boss, a husq. 55 Rancher, or a John Deere 56CS. They are all at about the same price.

Don't be bad mouthing the ol' mccolough. I know where there are about 3 different 610s that have cut so much firewood that it is not even funny. One of them is about 25 years old and has probably cut close to a thousand truckloads of good hardwood. Sure if I was in the logging business I would buy husky or stihl or something else but for a good cheap saw a mccolough will last a long time. The key to making them last is using mccolough two stroke oil in them. A neighbor had one that only lasted about six weeks due to using a different brand of oil. Just my thougts

55 Rancher 53 ccs, 3.3 hp, 11.4 lbs, Lots of 55 Ranchers sold over the years, a durable saw with the older style front chain adjustment. Good reputation uses a readily available 3/8, .050 chain.

Stihl MS 290 56 ccs, 3.75 hp, 13.2 lbs
Has a weight issue for the horsepower & not built to the same quality as the Stihl 026/036/044/066 saws. But, generally a good runner. Uses .325 chain.

Deere 056C 56 ccs, 4.1 hp, 13.2 lbs
This is a new design with similar features to the new Huskys (anti-vibe & side chain adjusters.) Have heard good reports on this saw. Made by EFCO in Italy. Uses .325 chain.

I say go for th husqvarna saw lineup. They are the nicest saw I have ever seen and heard of. besides that, they have excellant power to weight ratios and outmuscle the stihl saws, so I say go for the husky. I sont know much about stihl saws but they have metric parts on them and husky has SAE non-metric on them. plus the husky is a very low problem, high reliability and high performance unit no matter what model you buy. go with husky you wont regret it.

I have never owned a husky but I've used them .I have owned a few stihl's. I prefer a jonsered to them all.The only problem with them is there are not many dealers around, mine is 50 miles away. For a throw away saw to keep in the farm truck I like the $99 poulan's from wal mart.

I have owned a Partner for over 20 years and really like it. Starts and cuts with the best of them. No problems other than replacing chains and spark plug. Has been used a lot of hours.

Which brand is best? It's kind of like the old Chevy vs. Ford vs. Plymouth debate I had when I was a kid. All I can say is I like what I have. I have three Stihls. 009 (1982), 026(1992) and a 036 (2000?). The 009 I still use for branches and trimming. Great for stuff on the ground - nice and light. The 026 I have used the most and it cuts well. The 036 is great for the big old oaks I cut up. The only problem with the 036 is the size (weight). After an hour or so my arms tend to get a little tired. I have not had trouble with any of my Stihls. They have only needed routine maintenance. I know other brands are good, but I have had great luck with Stihl, and would not hesitate to buy another one if needed. Gordy MN

No comment on which is actually the best, however my son bought a stihl in 1988, cuts lots of firewood, other than plugs and some chains, he has spent nothing on it and it still starts good.

No saw is any better than the maintenance it gets. That said, what are you going to do with the saw? If you will use it more than 4 hours at a time, get the lightest of the three (Rancher). If you will be using it for cutting down 30" trees, get the more powerful of the three (Deere). If 30" & less sized trees and 4 hours at a time, get the one in the middle...the compromise (Stihl). If you are cutting full time, get a professional grade saw that has good dealer support.
Stay safe, whatever you decide.

Bill

I have been very pleased with my Stihl 029. I haven't tried the others but I doubt anyone will be disappointed with any of the three.

Both stihl and husky's are good saws. I work for a utilty crew and have used both and own a model 55 husky. It is better if you purchase it from a dealer rather than a big box store.

I vote Stihl. Mine was bought used from a guy who used it to cut firewood for sale. If it were a car it would have about a million miles on it.
Never fails to start.

I own a 55 and it has been the best saw.I have tryed the farm boss and I think they are under powered. Buy the Husky and you won't be disapointed.

Just when we haven't had a "Stihl vs. Husqvarna" argument for a couple of weeks now, somebody has to start a new one.

The MS290 (aka 029) is not that great of a saw. It's much heavier than the 026 (which I think is the MS260 now). Spring for the 026 or 036 (MS260/MS360?) if you decide on Stihl; they are far better saws.

I'm not familiar with the other saws you mention.

I have an 029 so I'm not bad mouthing it, but I think its a little heavy for its power. I'd get the 036 or 026 if I was to due it over again, but I don't think you can kill a Stihl
