Old treadle grinding wheel design?

I was "given" (for free, I couldn't believe it!) an old grinding stone (sandstone type) that has a large square center hole. It is about 30 inches across the diameter and about 2.5 inches wide on the face. It is in really good shape (I don't often get that fortunate). The friends that gave it to me are moving across the country and don't want to haul it with them.

I am interested in finding plans, pictures, or patterns to build an old style treadle grinding wheel. The sort that had a seat, with a peddle board, and used a suspended tin cup to wet the wheel. Something that would look at home in an old-time (early 1800's) blacksmith shop.

Any help would be appreciated!

I also have a grinding wheel like you described and plan to build a stand in the spring, I would appreciate any pictures or information on the making of a stand which you may have, I also have supplies of oak,hickory walnut cherry and pine lumber and would like to build the stand my self. any information or parts you could furnish me would be appreciated

Chris: Send me a snail mail address and i'll send you some sketches of how it is supposed to look, and what you'll need to make it workable!

There are still plenty of those old pedal grinders out there if you look in the right place.
That would save you the work of making one.

Jake, I know there are old gringing wheel assemblies for sale if I look in the right places. But this is just a challenge for me. I enjoy building things like this. The wheel was free and I have plenty of oak, maple, ash and walnut lumber, so it is just a matter of looking at what is out there and putting together an idea of what looks and works good.

Sounds like you have pretty much in mind what you want, Why not just go build it? My Grandma Had a small 12"? one that sat on top of her chicken house for years. It went through here estate sale in '84-'85 don't know where it is now.

The shaft on hers was suspended on some old steel skate wheels-2 in line, in a cast iron fixture with the shaft just laid in the V between them. Can't remember how the wheel was fastened to the shaft, except it went through a block of wood in that square hole.

It was suspended in what had 'once' been a wooden box,-mostly gone when I saw it- water in the box would lubricate the wheel

Kelvin, I do have a few ideas in my mind about what I "think" I want. But having a picture or some sort of design to confirm or enhance a design... saves time by not "re-inventing the wheel" so to speak. If I can't find a pic or design of what I am visioning in my mind, I may just go ahead and start building it anyway. This is more of a "research stage" right now.

Chris: I have drawn up a sketch of how the stand is supposed to look, and also have written instructions on building the assembly. I'll send them to you if you desire! I have also sent them to another fellow who has posted in the forum. If you contact me and want the plans, etc., the plans will come from Outlook Express, from "ahammitt", with an attachment, while the written pages will be from Yahoo! Sometime time ago, my son was cleaning out and demolishing his old barn. He was gonna bury one like you describe, I brought it home, still got some hardware, but no stand parts. patented back in 1800's. I was always gonna use a gear head motor for mine. Now thats lazy aint it?.
