I bought a used oregon 511a on ebay for $180 shipping included. I've used it about a year now and am completely satisfied. I've also seen stihl, belsaw, and silvey ones on ebay for good prices. I think your better off spending more for a quaity one now and have it last a lifetime rather than buying cheap plastic junk that will not last or do a good job. Just my 2 cents worth.

Mine came with the oregon manual. But it only has sharpening specs for some oregon chain. When you buy new chain there is usally a booklet included that gives sharping specs for that manufactures chains. You can try oregonchain.com they have info on grinder set up and sharpening specs for their chains. You can also check some of the saw manufactures web sites as they might have some info. Hope some of this helps you.

What's wrong with the Oregon model??? Mines been working fine for me now for about 7 years and i've used it to make ripping chains ect... I don't think you can find one cheaper that's any where near the quality. Northern Hydraulics has decent prices on the Oregon model.

I bought the Oregon model because a friend bought the cheapo model, and told me among other things the frame flexed waaay too much. He also said it just wasn't consistent! He ended up buying the Oregon model too.

There's a guy over on Yahoo's milling site right now complaining his Harbor Freight one is junk.

Can't go wrong with a Silvey Saw Chain Grinder.
I think it is a Model 310. I've had one for almost 20 years. Cutters come out factory sharp.

Just bought a electric sharpener a Harbor Freight, cost $80.00 and works as good as the Oregon one where I had worked.

Larry,

After years of trying files, grinders, etc., I have finally settled upon a Gamn' sharpener as the best non-powered sharpener I've ever used. If you are unfamiliar with one, it clamps on your bar like a captive file system, but uses a tapered burr on a crank handle. You find the shortest tooth of one angle, set the sharpener to sharpen it, then the rest at that angle are already set. You just line up a tooth, shove the grinding burr on the hole, turn the handle, and in about 10 seconds (no kidding!) the tooth is sharpened and you are ready to move on.

I bought mine at an auction for about $10, but new, they are around $40-45. The burrs are around $15 each and last a long time.

Good luck!

Ron

The Gamn' Sharpener con be ordered directly (be sure to specify the bur size you need) from the manufacturer, Gamn' Enterprises, Inc., Dept. TMEN, RR 5, Box 39A Darmstadt Road, Evansville, Indiana 47711, or (with a charge cord) by calling the firm's tollfree number, 800/457-3392 (dial 812/8676469 in Indiana).

I don"t think they are in business anymore. I tried both phone numbers and they go to a different company for the 800 number and a private residence for the other number. I did a search on the web and could not find any information. I would like to order more burrs if anyone has a good phone number.

For a non-electric, GRANDBERG makes the better ones for a lot of companies. There are a lot of variations available. Can you be more specific, like wheather you will be doing in in the field or shop.

Got a lot of chains to do? Go with the Oregon Silvey, Or Stihl. Not many? Good files and a guide that clamps on to the file. Best sharpener made for the money.
