14 ga C-Purlin: weld or bolt together?

Am getting ready to add a lean-to onto the side of my shop. Will be about 24x24 clear span with roughly a 1-in-12 pitch. Here in CenTx, don't have snow loads to worry about and significant ice only about 1 yr out of 5.

Am planning to use 14 ga. C-purlin as both rafter and purlin. For the rafters, will probably use a pair of C-purlins back to back to form a kind of I-beam. The advice I've gotten around here says it'll be plenty strong if I just bolt everything together. My inclination, though, is to weld it. The wind loads can be pretty severe (live on a hill) and it seems like any flexing would wallow out the bolt/screw holes and lead to cracking.

What do y'all think: bolt together or weld? Thoughts appreciated!!

Would not use the C purlins for the rafters. Talk to Mueller.

Weld it and forget it.

Y'all gonna use some of that mueller steel? I Used 2"X6" rect. tubing for my rafters and welded the C' purlins to them. Held up to two real good Arizona storms this summer. This was for a 24'x32'open carport.

I'd drill holes, fish plate, and use a fine thread bolt with a 'bite nut'.The nut and washer are one piece and the bottom of the washer has grooves in it to bite into the metal. You might be able to buy the nuts at Mcmaster-Carr or Fastenal.Good luck.
