I have a 5hp 30 gallon craftsman air compressor that I have had for about 15 years. I don't use it much..... ....maybe a couple hours a month. I have never drained the tank. Just never knew I should. It still works fine but I am concerned after reading some posts. Is there anything I can do to check for damage and or flush it out?

Never Drained?? Doesn't the air spray water when you use it??? If like mine, it has the drain valve on back end, below the wheels. Somewhere! I drained mine after each use, it blows lots of water at first. Then just makes big noise! May even freeze water coming out, then blows clear and goes again, does mine. I bet you'll need a pliers to open yours now! Turn easy! The valves bend/brake with too much pressure. The DO unscrew from tank if you do that and need new one. The water will be rusty and tank inside too, but you can't do anything with it I know of. My 30 year old standby finally rusted out spot in bottom of tank and leaks air now. Needs new tank, but they cost as much as whole Presser it seems. I bought a big 60 gallon stand up now and drain it after done in garage each time. I also have pipe in garage with drain valves I hit occasionally and water traps on most outlets to drain some too. W/out the traps or draining, water will collect in hoses and tools and cause problems, spray out on your parts or mess up painting if you do that.

Sounds about like the one I have had for over 15 years. I would just drain it, dont try and flush it out. Never attempted to flush this one, but I do drain it frequently when in use.

Mike, seems to me like you could remove the check valve, on top of the tank, then pour in a pint of lite weight motor oil in to slow down the internal rust, unless you are using it for spray painting. Its about time for that valve to go bad anyway. The motor strains starting off, and belts slip if air pressure is backflowing toward the compressor. I have a good tank with a bad compressor, if you need it. alvinnms
