I bought one of those pressurized pot sandblasters from Harbor Freight last year and just now getting around to using it. What size sand works the best? I have one of those suction type guns that you stick in a bucket. I have to use fine grade with it. I just wanted to know before I got started with the wrong size. Town is 20 miles away. Thanks, Nathan

I use # 30 silica sand. It is also called industrial sand, and is made in a crusher to produce sharp edges and requires a mask to avoid inhaling Silica dust. Play sand has rounded edges and isn't as efficient as a blast media. It is also available in # 60 grit for delicate work.

I found the best sand to use is kids play sand---buy it at any home Depot type store, and if you put down a big tarp you can re-use it.

Its funny- when I asked for sandblasting sand at my local lumber yard, they happily sold me white play sand that has printed clearly on it "DO NOT USE FOR SANDBLASTING". So, of course, I did just that and it worked fine. I'm sure this is lawyerspeak and meant to save the maker from lawsuits, and little bearing in reality. They shoudl just say "use a respirator".

After a silly number of phone calls, I finally found an industrial supplier that will sell me "black beauty" slag media- and this stuff really cuts! I think it is leftover from steel refining. $6.50/100 lb bag.

Regarding grit size, the limiting factor for me is that the larger grits seem easier to clog than the finer. I went with the mid grade black beauty and no clogs.

I also suggest buying a carbide tip from TIP. They outlast ceramic 100 to 1. Cost is about $35. I have a blaster like yours, I think, and it uses the same size tip as the TIP "38 special" blast gun.

One more thing- I was using too much air pressure (130psi) and I think that contributed to absurdly fast wearing out of my ceramic tips. Run at about 90psi.

Thanks guys. Leon, I had a problem with clogging too with the med. grade sand in the suction type. So I wanted to be better prepared when it comes time to use the pot type. I haven't taken it out of the box yet, but I need to get busy. I have about 4 or 5 items that need blasting. I was thinking about making some type of 3 sided plywood box about 4x8 to catch some of the mess, but was wondering about air circulation. I like to blast when the wind is blowing enough to carry most of the dust away from the house and me.

Nathan, whatever sand you use, be sure to run it through a screen first. Specially play sand, isn't all the same size. That is probably why your suction rig kept jamming.
