It is Christmas shopping time. What should I get for my boys ages 30 & 35. The older one works on rail road engines and has quite a few tools. The younger one enjoys working around his home and doing a little wood working. I got them ratchet wenches a year or two back. In the past I have gotten them Leatherman tools, LED flashlights. I need a list for Santa.

Thanks, Fred..... ...

A tool that I use every single day and feel lost without is a GOOD Pocket Knife.

I was going to tell you what I came up with. Then it came to me, what if one of the boys read this. So it will be after the 25th before I let you know what I got them. Thank you all for the help. I was drawing a blank as to what to get them. Now if I can only come up with something for the wife.

Hi Fred,

I'm the worlds poorest gift giver as I really think something is usefull when it doesn't suit there needs so what I do is give them each $250 cash.

I ask them one time if they wanted me to go back and start picking out the gifts again. Both said no!

Since many gifts are never used, get them a good fire extinguisher and hope they never have to use it.

Fred, Get them each a nice set of Nicholson hand files, at least 4-5, and a good handful of good hacksaw blades, isn't any shop in the country that isn't always out of these two items. For the woodworker, how about some good goggles, and a couple of blades for his table saw. John in Nebr.

That sounds like a good one and something that they can use. A good file is a fine tool a cheep one is a pain.

How about a pair or two of these, if they do any welding or ?. They also come in a smaller size.

Vise Grip large jaw pipe pliers #12LC

I use mine 99% of the time as a welding clamp, with the narrow low profile top jaw & the throat depth, a great all purpose clamp and will work in places where others won't. One of my most used clamps & the ones I usually will reach for first.

Over the years my son has about all the tools he needs, and then some. I look for something "new" on the market that he dont have yet. Got a grandson so its time to start over again.

Do your son's read much? Go to a Barnes and Noble near where you live, they have just about anything you can find for great selections on any subject.
Another idea is to take them to a good sporting event. These are just a couple of the things that are different. You don't need to give them something that pertains to their hobby. If your saving your money for a rainy day, give them some of it so you can see them enjoy it. That way two people or more get to enjoy your gift.

What I always thought was a useful gift was 10 lbs of lead, a hammer head mold and a melting ladle.

You put a piece of 3/4" pipe in the mold for a handle and pour lead for the hammer heads. Worked in a machine shop repairing machines and these were very handy.

When working on stubborn machinery it is surprising how many times you need a little help 'fine tuning' and and a steel or rubber dead-fall hammer won't get the job done.

When it is well used, remelt it and make another.

I have 2 son in laws like your boys..I have had to resort to giving them gift cards from their favorite stores..I know it is not as personal, but it allows them to hold the card until they need a tool for a specific job..Wives are happy because the expense does not come out of their monthly expenses

since they are both 'tool' guys this might be a waste of time... but the most handy tool and the most used in my shop is a cordless drill with a quick change holder chucked up...

seems no matter what project I'm working on I can find a use for that cordless drill... had aq 9.6 volt Makita for 11 years and the clutch finally got weak...replaced with an 18 volt Craftsman and despite it's weight it's two times better than the makita...

and if you really like them... get a cordless combo set with saw, drill, light, etc... maybe they will return the swell favor come your birthday or Christmas next year !!!

john
happy holidays !

How about a set of gear wrenches. A 7 peice set goes on sale for $40 or $50.

Just buy them a match set of tractors to restore they will love it. I know to much money. So go to a local tractor dealer and buy them each a tractor toy.
