OT--Puter Trouble!

After 4yrs my puter decided to take a dump. Smoked a modem that caused Win98Se to corupt some start up files. My video card has started doing funny things and then my fan on my power supply began to squeel. Installed a USR software modem and can't get the thing to work. So it's time to buy another system.

All I need is a system that will do my books and get me on the internet. I don't do video games or any external sound work. I want a 60hz plus video refresh rate.

I'm looking at a 1.6Gghz Celeron Intel motherboard with built in video and sound card on MB, 20mb HD, 126mb memory, CD, 3.5 floppy, mid-tower case, USR hardware modem. About $350 delivered. suggestions?

?) I have a Hitachi Super Scan 751 19" monitor about 4yrs old. From what I can tell this should work well for a 60hz plus refresh rate with the new Intel MB. Correct?

How will Win98Se function with my useage with the higher 1.6Ghz CPU? Or should I look to upgrade to Win XP or?

Any other suggestions?

My 2 pesos' worth: The 1.6 processor would be ok with me but I'd (a) add a bigger HD (hard drives are cheap), (b) definitely go with more memory, (c) add a CD. Finally, I've never been much of a fan of the Win9x series so would go with either XP or, if you want something a little more tested, Win2K (works for me). Even without the graphics and sound stuff, basic operating systems these days use huge amounts of memory & disk space to run smoothly, hence my recommendation for more of both. I run several different webservers off a box that's stepped only a little from the above, and it's a pretty fast - and stable - setup, even with lots of CGI apps.

John I found some more info on Intel's website that they also didn't think too much about there inigrated video system as they no longer offer that option.

From your post and the Intel info, I learned how the newer MB's use ram for the video buffer. I'll be upping the ram to 256mb.

Ya but I have a 13mb HD now thats only 1/2 full if that...LOL

I never like the HP or Compaq home PC's
Dell is O.K.

If using windows XP get as a minimum 512 megs of RAM. the $499 Dell an prolly the wally world one don't come with enough memory for winders XP to run at it's best.

on your Intel motherboard make sure the RAM speed is NOT 133 MHZ if it is your just wasting processing power as the memory is the bottleneck nowadays. 233 or 266MHZ memory or faster is money better spent.
