old lincoln arc welder on trailer - not running

Does anybody here know much about older welders? I picked up an old lincoln 200 amp arc welder on a trailer and am trying to get it to run. It isn't getting spark. It is powered by a 4 cyl engine of some sort, is getting gas, turs over very well, just won't fire. I know basically nothing about these. One thing I found that may be related (or may not) is a small black box, about 1x2x1.5" that has a wire attached to each side (about 12 guage) has had a wire break off of one side. The insides of this box look to be an electic magnet of some sort, I thought maybe a stator? Does anybody know where to get one? Could it be causing the loss of spark? Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

I don't know much about these old Lincolns, but I know that some used magnetos for spark. Could this be what you're talking about?

most portable welders have a low oil pressure shutdown switch "murphy switch". the switch must be overidenat starting, a spring loaded override button on the pannel next to the starter button. the button usually has a box like you described behind it. the override must be depressed till the engine builds oil pressure. good luck

FIRST YOU NEED TO FIND THE PLATE ON MOTOR AND THE PLATE ON THE WELDER. IT WILL GIVE YOU THE IMFO. THAT YOU NEED. THEN CALL A PLACE IN YOUR AREA. THAT SELLS WELDERS THAT WILL TELL YOU THE TYPE MOTOR THAT YOU HAVE AND THEN. YOU MAY ORDER A BOOK ABOUT THE MACHINE YOU WILL BE ABLE TO KNOW ALL ABOUT YOUR WELDER. THE BEST WAY TO LEARN IS TO READ. THEN FIX

Reasons for no spark: coil, bad points or condensor or corroded wires in top of distributor. The thing your talking about (black box) might be an idler...to bring the engine back to idle when the welder is not being used...an automatic function to save gas and the welder by bringing it back to idle till you arc it again. They did have Continental 4 cylinder engines in Lincoln welders...count the spark plugs. Fred OH

Are plug wires or other engine parts for this something I could get at a basic auto parts store? Was this engine ever used in a car that I could use for cross reference when looking for parts?

I'm getting gas, changed the antifreeze/oil, etc. The plug wires were pretty soft from many years of oil sitting on them in storage but thought it would still get some spark. I'll buy a set if I can find something that will work. Will not having the suspected idler control cause it to not run at all? Can I just connect the two wires from each end together to bypass it until I get it running?
Thanks for the quick reply!

Brian, If you have an old Continental or Hercules engine in that welder with a magneto on it be sure to use a metallic core spark plug wire. Champion D16 or UD16 non-resistor spark plugs or equivalent in other brands. DO NOT use the carbon-core wires with a magneto. Carbon-core wires and resistor spark plugs are fine if you have a battery distributor ignition. The Pertronix electronic conversion kits are available for them too.

Continental 4cyld., F162, firing order = 1-3-4-2, #1 = top right hand tower on mag cap, then in clockwise rotation: #3,4,& 2.

Be sure and go to a NAPA auto parts store...some of the others won't even know what your talking about but try if they're close. Don't cost anything but your time...and I think the plug wires are copper wired instead of graphite. Can't realy tell about the black box without looking at it. If NAPA is close to you...take the welder with you...see if the mechanic will walk out and look at it...he'll know what to do. If he ain't busy he might even get it running for you. It would be a break for him to work on something easy instead of today's headaches. Fred OH

If there is a Napa auto parts store near you, they can get almost any part for any engine ever made. If you can't get wires for the engine, you can look at the high performance wire kits. they often come with a length of wire and the boots. you cut the wire and assemble them yourself.

You should be able to get parts a an auto parts store, if they are any good that is. I get parts for a con. engine I have from my parts store, you may need to take to old parts with you so they can match them up.
