OK this may not be exactly tool related but I have been looking for the strike anywhere matches like the old Ohio Blue Tips. The only matches I can find are what they call kitchen matches that must be struck on the box which must never lasts long enough to strike all the matches in the box. Someone told me that they were outlawed, which sounds kinda crazy to me but given all the crazy regs the government comes up with it just might be true. Anyone have any ideas or info where to get them if in fact they are still available?

i like them too, easier to strike on the wood stove than the box. We found ours at our local ACE hardware store. hope this helps.

Hmmm.
I've gotta a different solution...

Fire = Zippo!

I discovered that butane lighters just refuse to ignite in cold temps!

Just be aware that the strike-anywhere matches ignite easily. We had a box sitting on the mantel above the fireplace. The box was accidentally knocked off the mantel and fell onto the carpeted floor. The matches ignited from the impact.

I helped a friend look for them last winter We found some at Ace Hardware. I have gone to carrying book matches in my pocket. In winter it's "Wood, Hay, and Water (ice) and Fire is my Friend" Oh BTW I saw an neighbor's TR combine yesterday in the sunflower field and Fire was not his friend.

Vermont Country Store.com has piles of them. 802-362-8440 They have catalog sales. The matches are not what they were 30 years ago, but you if you're clever, you can strike them anywhere, (even on a frozen bar of soap!).

Um, okay. And just how did you discover that? That's a new one on me.

Hey Greenbeanman, on Mt Washington at 35 below with sustained winds of 95 mph, everything's frozen. Call it a stunt and an exercise in physics. To boot, Tristan Jones the famous singlehanded sailor, tested this out when he was frozen in the artic ice in his tiny wooden boat. Seriously cold weather stimulates creativity.

I use the strike-on-box kitchen matches. The boxes have two striking surfaces which last more than enough time to use all 250 matches per box.

Try camping/outdoor supply stores I have seen them at quite a few. I have not seen the blue tips latley but I have seen the strike anywhere and waterproof strike anywhere at hardware and outdoor suppliers. Good luck, David.

They are still around, saw some not long ago someplace. When I was a little tyke we called them cowboy matches. Had an old BB gun, used to load one in the Bbl and shoot it against concrete, sounded like a cap gun. Hold them in fingers just right and toss them and they would ignite. Got to quit thinking about that, man I am getting old.

When I was a kid I would throw a whole box and watch it flame up.

I don't know where you are located but here in Wisconsin we can get the book matches and the large boxes of strike anywhere matches IF YOU ASK FOR THEM. THEY ARE NOT ON THE SHELF. The small boxes that you need to strike on the box have dissappeared entirely. I have been told that they are too dangerous to transport. Doesn't make sence to me.

If you have a Dollar Tree, Dollar Geberal , or family Dollar store in your area look there. I just bought 3 bokes of Kitchen matches that are strike anywhere at the local Dollar Tree store here in Tn.
