Plating Metal at home -- for your own use

I'm interested in learning how to plate metal at home, both for decoration and for rust protection. I used to see kits sold in Shotgun News that included everything you needed (except car batteries) but haven't seen these for some time. Anybody know an easy way to do this? Could you use a battery charger instead of car batteries? I have a cheap source for scrap gold and silver, and think this would be a great way to dress up and protect gun parts and tractor/car parts (non critical fit stuff). Any advice?

I'm not sure on the spelling but I think its Lindsay's books has how-to's for do it yourself plating.

Go to Brownells.com, a gunsmithing supply. They have several ways of blueing/plating and kits for just about everymeans you can think of. I have a set of blueing tanks. Besides gunbluing I use them to clean parts and blue them for protection.

Try this site. Many different plating methods. Some pretty cheap and some not. Chrome to gold, whatever you want.

That site won't let me search, says that you have to be a member to use that function.

I'm really looking for ways to do this on the cheap -- I searched the web and sound kits for $600+, but if I have to pay that kind of money I may as well just send the parts out, you can get a lot of stuff plated for $600!!!!!

Hi Lee,

Something else to consider is most plating processes use some very nasty chemicals. Depending on where you live, A neighbor could send out the local EPA to make your life very costly and miserable.

Then there's the waste products to deal with.
