reversing the direction of an electric motor

I have an old cast iron Beaver tablesaw that I need to replace the motor on. I got a 1/2 hp capacitor water pump motor from my neighbor but the motor turns the blade the wrong direction. Can the wiring be changed so the motor will turn in the opposite direction?

it is a table saw - put the blade on backwards and stand on the other side of the table.....

I think most centfical pump motors are not reversible because if they were accidentaly started counter clockwise it may unscrew the impeller and damage the pump. most pumps have screw-on impellers and the motors turn clockwise looking at the fan end. the 3450 rpm would be good for a saw, just use equal size sheaves. I did reverse a pump motor once but it involved turning around the stator whithin the end bells (had to extend the leads and move the fan over) Was a complex job but I got the motor for nothing and it has been running my air compressor for 10 years now.

Can't tell if the motor is from a centrigual pump (read "jet" pump) from your post, BUT if it is, it probably turns 3450 RPM and will really make the blade sing. Also, most of those motors are internally wired for one rotation. A motor shop could take it apart and change it, but that would probably cost more than the correct, new motor.

put the belt on so it makes a figure "8" instead of "0". This will reverse direction.

Just reverse the polarity of the start or the run windings.

Yes if its a reversing motor some are and some aren't you do it by changeing the wires on the brushes. If it has a plate over the wireing hook up place it should tell you how in there. Or a good motor place should be able to tell you how. hope this helps some, but I don't know how to tell you what you need to do to do it sorry

SOme A/C motors cannot be reversed. Check inside the wire terminal cover plate and see if there is a diagram. If its a belt driven saw, can you reverse the motor mount?

most single phase 110/220vac motors can be reversed by swaping the starter winding wires in their connection order with the run windings. There should be a tag/plate on the motor that gives the run specs. along with the necessary connection info for 110/220vac operation as well as the reversing connection data. As noted all motors are not reversable but the non-reverser's are useally the high rpm unit's.(3200rpm)

The motor maynot have clearly marked leads for reversing. However just isolate where the start windings are fed from supply. Now reverse the directions. Any single phase motor with start windings can be reversed.
