between me and my internet server. here's the problen. a couple of times a week, when i log on and get connected. i try to open a web site on the internet, only to have a "page not found, etc" pop up. this happens over and over, i cannot open a web site. if i log off, and try again in an hour or so everything is working , no problems. my isp says it's the computer, i say it is them. i've checked everything with the help of their tech. the computer's ok. sorry for long post, anyone got an answer/ideas. thanks

I run an ISP and I would say the issue is either the noisy phone lines already mentioned or the ISP has a perticular modem that is not cofigured properly. When you dial in, you connect to one of many maodems these could be specilized modem banks of just a regular old external modem. When you connect to the ISP, the server needs to provide you with TCP/IP address info. Part of this info is you DNS servers. These are like the phone book of the Internet and translates the www.whatever.com to the acual address needed to connect. If DNS is not working, you will get the errors you explained eventhough you have a good network connection. Feel free to contact me via email if you want further info.

Is this problem on every web page you try and open or only certain ones?
If you have this problem again, try going to a common web site like msn.com. See if the problem still occurs.

Let me know what happens

Nick

If it is your ISP, everyone else on that local number should be having the same problem so I doubt it. Someone made a suggestion about cleaning your temporary internet files and cookies which can be done (what is your operating system Windows 98 or XP ?) and do you use IE6 for your browser. That would be a good first step. If you have a friend with a lap top you might have them try your phone line and their lap top on their system and also your system to see what the results are. I have seen this to be a telephone line problem in extreme cases.

ya, static on your telephone carriers line or your lines will cause this. I finally called Verizon (phone company) today. Static is so bad I have to ask people to repeat themselves often, yet they hear me perfectly. Branches on lines, poor connections etc. will cause it.

Sometimes the server at the website itself is down - maintenance, etc. That'll get you those messages too. If it comes alive later, don't worry. Not your computer!

No computer expert here, but the same thing happens to me sometime if the page I am on is still loading and I try to go to another. Try waiting till the lower left corner says "Done", then try your next page. Usually works for me, but slows things down.

I don't know that much about computors but you might try this. Go to the top of the screen and click on "tools" from the display, delete "cookies" and " files". Set your history to "one" day. You might try to "re-boot"--restart the computor. This has worked for me and I was told that my computor memory was low. This evedently un-jams the system. REMEMBER--I am not a computor whize!

If they have more than one dial up number. Create a separate dialup number for each number. Then try each one at different times. You might find one that wont boot you.

Charles:
The servers are "NEVER WRONG" Least it seems that way. I have this happen, retry and bango its there. Is it timing out on you? Maybe you need to set the time out up a smidgeon. Some servers have a little something to be desired. Been there, done that.

I have that problem at times and when it happens I just go off line and restart my computer and all is well, some times these things just don't want to work right even if all should be right. I know this isn't much help but it works for me
