as a chop saw if I replace blade with appropriate abrasive blade? I know Santa is getting me a miter saw and I was thinking this saw could be dual purpose - wood and metal provided correct blades are installed. Does this sound plausible or am I missing something?

Have thought of making a chop saw. Approximately 5" by 24" frame of 1 1/2" angle with a motor on one end, arbor on the other, hinge pivot in the middle somewhere, mounted on a frame with a fence and you have a chop saw. With a guard of course. for angles clamp the work to the table at an angle, little or no frnce on one side to allow stock to extend out the back for angle cuts. Haven't made one yet because I have a horizontal band saw and enough else to do. But it wouldn't be too hard.

From what I read on another tool forum, the chop saw requires heavier bearings than does the miter saw. In essence, letting the blade pull/walk through material vs. the downpressure doing a chop.

Make sure its all metal or remove plastic when cutting. I had trouble finding 10" blades. Checked Lowes, tsc, etc.. all 12"-14". Finally found at NAPA.

Guess when my bday comes around in Jan. I will be asking for chop saw. Cheapo will work for me at this time. Just getting tired of chopping everything with my torch and then having to dress the edges.
Thanks again and I will keep the miter saw for wood!!

I use abrasive discs/blades in the handheld circular saw to cut most everything (steel). Have a ryobi abrasive chop saw as well -- the circular saw is even more portable.

Hi shep,

I like a 6" abrasive cut off wheel on a Makita 5" side grinder. It cuts much faster than my Milwaukee chop saw.

If I was going to cut alot of material, I would look at a horzontial bandsaw with a auto stop.

Ever try the .045 sait or walker zip cut wheels?I find them great on my 5" grinder.

I have a 10" Delta, I have used it to cut angle, rebar, even an I beam. It does beat the heck out of the saw but it will work. I have since gotten a dewalt chop saw for metal. I put a good carbide back on the delta, and she cuts perfectly. I built furniture grade newel posts out of clear cherry and did all the trim in my home with the old delta. The delta is a heavy one with a cast iron base weighs around 65 lbs. Maybe thats why it remained so accurate.

yea those were tough saws, i got one thats gota be 10 years old or more, i got it as payment for digging up a sewer pipe for a neighbor, he had bought it and found it was too heavy to lug around, so he bought a dewalt that was alot lighter and the delta just sat on the shelf for years, it has gotten alot of work at my house, sure is nice for cutting framing lumber and stuff, but i dont think i could bring myself to use it on metal, just too nice of shape for that

A decent woodworking compound miter saw costs say, $300 or more. You WILL tear it up using it for a metal chopsaw. I use my CM for woodworking, and while I'm no cabinet maker, I do need accuracy to make decent joints. One metal project and you may as well junk the CM.

I also dub around with metal fabrication. Bought a 14" chop saw for another $150 or so, keep my CM for woodworking.

I've never had one of the cheapo Harbor Freight chopsaws, but that may be an option, if your needs for metal cutting are light duty and/or infrequent.

I'd use a manual hacksaw before I'd even consider cutting metal with my compound miter.

Why destroy a miter saw. If you are only going to do an occasional cut, pick up a chop saw from Harbor Freight.

I know, junk tools, but I have had one for about 3 years and cut stuff for the barn. Couldn't justify the high price one for what little I use.

I have one just like in the photo. I have made a lot of cuts with it and it seems to work OK. Maybe it would be nice to have a more powerful chop saw, but I just could not justify the cost of a "name brand" unit. I don't know how long it will last, but suits my needs for now.

i sure would not risk tearing up a nice compound mitre saw on metal. The cheap HF saw is a better choice IMHO.

Got a bad link somewhere. When you get to Harbor Freight clunk in item #44829. It will give you a half price of $49.99 instead of the $99.99. Harbor Freight is famous for multiple prices-they don't always show or give you the lowest one.

I tried it with my 10" miter saw after reading the instructions "Do not use a metal cutting blade on this saw". Well the sparks soon wiped out the miter degree gauge at the back and particles from the steel and blade were about welded to the frame. But it did cut the metal.

Howdy, when I shopped for a mitre saw I found one that I could take the guard off, in order to put on the 14" blade. It did the job until I bought a metal cutting chop saw. Good luck

I tried this with my miter saw, it works but the blades are not as readily availible, are more costly, don't last as long and it makes a mess to clean up between usages. I bought a chop saw.
