Pratt-Whitney Metal lathe

Any one had any experiences with these lathes mainly a 13-30. Any parts availabity,good or bad lathe, buy or not

When it left the factory the P&W lathe was a fine machine, but it's hard to answer your "buy or not" question without knowing the condition of the particular machine you ask about.

Cincinnati Machine took over the P&W Machine parts business when P&W died, but their prices will be "$$$$" as they say in restaurant reviews.

You might want to inquire at the www.practicalmachinist.com bulletin board. A couple of the people there know P&W machines well and might even be able to point you toward used parts.

Pratt and Whitney made a fine lathe...I've run them and their just as good as Sidney, Springfield,, Lodge and Shipley, Reed Prentice...all machines of the WW2 era and beyond...all capable of doing the job. In shops of that era that had some of each, you would find one brand that you liked better than another...but the next guy would like another brand than you...they were all good...we won the war with them didn't we? And we built America with those machines. If you can run it under power, run all speeds and listen for clicks (chipped gear teeth), check all gibs to see if their all the way in...worn out, dial indicate the spindle for play radially and axially, engage the feed clutches and try to stop them by hand to see if they easily slip (worn out)...make sure that it has a steady rest...none available today and visually inspect the ways back at the far end (new condition there) and compare with up around the chuck area. Engage the half nut lever and rock carriage for worn out half nuts. Try all thread gears to see if their functional and inspect (eye ball) everything possible...run spindle wide open (fastest speed) to see if bearing get overly hot...see how much tooling thaat you can get thrown in on the deal if it meets most all the above specifications. Look at her like your gonna marry her...cause in all probability...if shes a good one...you'll have her for a lifetime. Fred OH
