T_Bone and others,,

Recently I read where you talked about an additive which you add to your PowerStroke cooling system. Could you tell me what you use and how you use it.. I have a 95 F-250 and I'm going to be changing the coolant, and would like to get your suggestions as to what I should add when I replace the coolant..

Thanks,
Dick

Try this link. This gentleman is one of the most knowledgeable persons I've seen on Powerstrokes.

You'll find the additive(DCA-4) at any Ford parts dept. They also have the test strips to maintain the proper concentration. Too much or too little are both bad. This additive is used in all diesel engines with wet sleeves, the rest of the diesel engines do not require it.

Am i right, that the power stroke is a parent bore block???? That they do "not" have replaceable sleeves??

This pitting is another problem with the ps engine that the Dodge/Cummins doesn't have!!

Robert- if you are running a Cummins-you better damn well believe they have a cavitation problem also. You need to change antifreeze every couple of years or use the extended life one which is supposed to give you 4 years before changing. Don't ruin your engine because you believe they don't have that problem. Jack

The B5.9 Cummins engine does NOT have wet sleeves, however, all larger Cummins engines do. Cummins requires low silicone coolant though. If Fleetguard anti-freeze is used it contains the additive anyway.

Hi dick,

NAPA and International also carry the FW16 additve and test strips.

From what I understand there's instructions on the package as I never used the stuff.

2002 and newer Ford PSD with the "gold" coolant does not need the addtive and is good for 100k miles.

There's a few trying the "Gold" (reported to be Zerex-5 ?) in the older engines vs the green but it's too early to tell "if" it's going to hold up. Ford says they have not tested the gold coolant in the older engines for seal compatibilty.
