Can someone please tell me what the best brand of pipe wrench is? I know there are many brands, ridgid, craftsman, some cheap ones at harbor freight, etc... What are the warrenties like with pipe wrenches? I will be using them for repairing tractors and other farm equipment at a dealership when I start working. Also, are the aluminium handles worth the extra money? I know they are a good bit lighter, but it seems that they would bend easier with a cheater pipe. One last thing, what are the handiest sizes to have when working on tractors? Thanks for the help!!!!!

anthony --

I consider the no-longer-manufactured Proto FORGED STEEL heavy-duty pipe wrench to be the best ever (these looked very much like the Ridgid heavy duty wrenches, but the main housing / handle was a heat treated steel forging rather than a heat treated iron casting like the Ridgid . . . they were NOT Stilson-pattern wrenches).

On today's market, the Ridgid and the Spanish SUPER EGO pipe wrenches are the cream of the crop.

Well it's pretty obvious Rigid is the best. Here's another vote for them. I've abused 'em many times and never broke one. Beat it with a hammer, pull on it with a cheater, do what you want with it. You'll have it for a lifetime and them some.

Rigid----- ----- ----- ----- ----- --period.....
go with the real thing not the light alloy delicate and lite pretty one. The newest one I have is 30 years old and just like the real old ones. Pretty hard to improve on perfect.

Where I used to work, we had a 48" Rigid pipe wrench and were using it to remove some 4" well casing that had been in the ground for 40-50 years. We tried using the cheater pipe, but there was no way we were going to unscrew that pipe.

The Massey backhoe was setting nearby so we just hooked the bucket over the handle and exerted some hydraulic power. Guess what.....broke the handle. I went to the wholesaler to get another wrench and told them how we broke the original. They said "Bring it in, we'll replace it" According to their rep, the replaceable jaw should have broken before the handle.

Never, ever expected any kind of warranty but they are a good company and want to keep their customers happy.

I have several sizes, includeing a 48". One time i put about a 10' cheater on it, and 3 of us pulled and pushed all we could, and never could hurt it!!!

I've used a 6' cheater on a 24" and even jumped up and down on it! I've never broken a Rigid yet. I have broken a couple off brands though.

My Dad came home one time with a 24 inch Rigid he got at a pawn shop he said was this worth $25 I said I would think. He has been dead 18 years and it has been abused 6 ft. cheaters etc. When he got he said the shop owner said he also had a 36 inch with a broken handle, a guy bought for $15 took it to Harry Coopers Supply and they said we will give you a new one or $100, he took the $100.

Rigid without a doubt. Have 4 different sizes, plus 1 -24" alum offset for so long I cant remember, also a rigid chain wrench. used and abused and still work good. Also same brand pipe cutters, dies and taps, reamers, etc. Have never had to replace any of them.

Anthony the best pipe wrench that you can buy is a Rigid. They will cost you more but will last you a lifetime if you don't abuse them..No Hammers, and no cheater bars. Probably the most useful size is a 12, 18, and 24 inch size. Rigid has a life time warranty on the housing or handle and the jaws are replaceable. If you are going to use them everday buy the aluminium, if once in a while save your money and buy the steel ones. My Daddy was a plumber and he would have run me away from home if I bought anything else. Craftsman used to be good tools but not any more they are alright for weekend use. Hope this helps.
