I am looking for information from users of the DR 12hp chipper and or the Mackissic Mighty Mac 12PT, 9hp towable chipper/shreader. I have narrowed my research to these 2 models and want to hear fom people who have had experiance with them. We live on 5.5 acres and need to do some extensive clean up of the wooded area. We suffered alot of damage in the past from wind storms and have many downed pines. We are looking to chip the branches and haul the trunks to the brush pile at the landfill. I want to know about reliablity and if the actual use meets the claims in on the web sites. Thanks for your input.
Joe

I have the video of all 3 of the DR chipper models. The 12hp is okay for small stuff under, 2"-3" diam. I think. The models as you may know are 10-12-18 HP. Last year out of some gumption I made my own small chipper, cost me about $800 The engine is what cost the money, My little chipper will chip stuff up to about 2" diam. I have used it 6 times since I made it last year. I should have bought a used one and saved a couple hundred bucks. I recommend renting a large 25hp one for the weekend and having a few buddys come over and help you, the rental cost will about $150/day. and the rental ones have auto feed on them, you dont have to shuff the branches in my hand like the DR chippers, or mine for that matter.

I own the DR 18 hp non-road towable and mounted it on a harbor frieght small trailer(the dr road trailer is only good for 35 mph!!!!!) and is cheaper . If you plan on doing only pine the 12 hp is ok however if you do oak, elm, beach you are going to dislike the speed .12 hp has only 1 knife where as the 18 has 2.
Last summer I cleared a lot with 4 inch maple saplings and the chipper didnt miss a beat !!!
If you get one buy an extra set of knives they seem to increase in price 15% every year !!

sorry, the knives last along time and require a diamond file to sharpen or a professional service. I own 4 acres. yeah renting a large one is ok but on SUNDAY or when I WANT too, I tow mine around to clean all of the falling branches
on an ongoing basis.
I dont know about you but I am a IMPULSIVE indavidual and dont like inconvences of reservations to RENT something.
ANYTHING over 4 1/2 inches is firewood anyway.

I don't know about the models you mentioned. But I have a 5hp chipper/shredder that I never use because the amount of work to cut off every branch, carry them over to the chipper, chip them, and haul the chips to where you want them is just not worth it. Consider renting one; if you still want it after a couple of days' work you'll have a better idea (or you won't need/want one anymore). If you have a tractor, get one that runs off the tractor's PTO.

Agree w Tom the chippers you are talking about are basically all jokes and not made to do any real work.find a rental yard and rent a real chipper. You can usually rent one for 75 to 150 a day and you will not be able to find enough people to help keep it fed. just be CAREFUL and good luck. have been in the chipper business for 25 years

25 years of repairing or using? I am looking for a manual and possibly a set of knives for a Promark 310. I have no idea where a dealer might be or who made it.

I agree, rent one, as once you use one for a couple days, you will probably be cured for wanting one!!

I've had (2) smaller gas powered ones, (1) hydrauilc powered one, and (1) pto powered with hydraulic in feed. By the time you cut all the limps off so it all will go through, and then get beat up pushing it all in, the fun is over in a hurry!!!

In my opinion any one that cost less than about 8 to $10,000.00 isn't worth draging home!!

What's wrong with brush piles???? My rabbits love me for makeing them, and every once in a while, we eat a couple rabbits!!!

Also keep in mind, that rotting dead wood in your woods is the next generation of tree's food supply!!

Robert

I was reading & wondered why no one had mentioned brush piles. I have 30 acres of timber that provide plenty of firewood and all the smaller stuff gets added to piles around the other 80 acres. Quail & rabbit numbers are up since I started making brushpiles.
