Our Co-op leaves the old poles on site. I found 2 of them with the bushhog a few years ago. I wasnt happy about that but they reminded me that it was 'their' right of way and they could do with it as they choose.

I am sure every coop has a different policy for what they do with their old poles. We always ask the property owner if they want them when we are changing out poles. If they do, we always skid them to the edge of the field. If the line is going through the woods, we will push them to the edge of the right of way. We almost always take the old hard ware off of them. Some times the property owners don't want them, so we haul them back in and put them on the "old pole pile".

By the way, BC, I checked the prices of the ties here in Fredericktown. $11 for #1 and $7 for #2. I don't imagine the #2's are very good.

What Jarod and the others have told you is righton. Check the electric companies. We used to sell the old poles for a dollar a foot. Now we give them away to get rid of them.

Last time I checked the Farm supply here in Fredericktown Mo., had used ties for $5 a piece. Fredericktown is about 80 miles south of St. Louis on hwy 67. You might want to drive down here sometime.

I have to go to the farm supply to buy some straw this morning. I will double check the price of the ties.

BC,

Let me tell you about old poles. 'tis the season that winter storms shall make them abundant. Time to start your research now for this "free" resource. Contact your local power company and others in the immediate area. Be patient and try again if you don't get a return call. Once you find out where they keep all the poles that cars, wind, ice, age, etc require them to retire, you will know where to continue checking for the materials you are looking for. Get in good with the yard store keeper. Most of the time they are happy to see them go, but make sure you take EVERYTHING YOU TOUCH. If you cut off broken ends and hardware and leave it, someone else will have to clean it up and it may ruin your chances to return to this veritable treasure chest of materials. Please don't call them telephone poles (telephone companies buy very few poles these days) and make sure you bring a sharp hatchet or bolt cutters to remove the copper ground wires if you have to cut them up on site with a chainsaw. Most poles are at least 35' in length with some reaching 70' or more.

Around here we can buy used poles from the REA for $3. (norwegians are $2!) Guy in north central MN markets used ties for $4.50-6.00. Gets them from the railroad by dismantling their switching yards. I have neighbors who work for the RR - they say to call the RR and ask for the Trainmaster for info on ties.

Rail road ties use to be available but have not seen any lately.
The electricity company came through a year or so ago and replaced the poles on the street. Seeing the opportunity for free fence post I asked for some of the old post. The foreman told me that I could take all I wanted as long as I took the whole post and did not leave scraps for them to pick up. The reason was-- He said they had to get a permit for every post they hauled down the highway.
We have had two super fund clean up sites I know of in our local area. Creosote is now a controlled substance and highly regulated.

Seems like there aren't any more aboveground telephone wires or poles, but the power companies usually have old/removed poles, try outside the city at the smaller REA power companies. You've called all the landscaping companies, large home stores, and such? For RR ties. John in Ne

Obviously I'm not much help on your question of buying RR ties, however up here I don't think you can buy them anymore, regular homeowners that is. For years the used ones were for sale at almost any lumber yard and guys used them for landscaping, etc. Because of the environmental concerns of the creosote etc. leaking out of them into yards, they are no longer available. Must be some sort of law I think.

From what I was told by the railroad co. is that they don't want to be sued because of the creosote damaging the enviorment. They don't want the liability.
