Borrowed a 1-1/2" socket from the neighbor - turns out it has a 5/8" drive. Never heard of those. He thinks he got it in a box at an auction, has never used it himself. It is a deep socket and has a real heavy wall. Anybody know about that?

Sioux Tools used to market a 5/8 impact wrench, the story told me was this, when high powered air impacts came out after WWII, the manufacturers wanted to go to 5/8 drive on them so people wouldn't be splitting their 1/2 drive sockets with the air tools, and maiming themselves, with resultant lawsuits. Economy prevailed, as mechanics didn't want two whole sets of sockets. Also believe government and industry may have specified them, so they didn't disappear from the assembly line, being nonstandard. This was also happened in WWII when government assembly lines specified 5/16 drive socket sets, just so they wouldn't disappear into home shops. John in Nebr.

You might weld an old broken or worn out 3/4" socket on the back of it to use in a pinch...probably use a stainless type rod and don't get too hot. Fred OH

I was always told they were the idea of some of the major manufacturers, way back when, as way to keep employees from taking them home. It wasn't a size that the average Joe could get the actual drive tool for so with no driver they had no reason to "borrow" them when they had a project to do at home. Look around at some of the older tool repair shops I guarantee you one of them will have an adapter lying around somewhere.

Proto used to make 5/8" drive tools too. I had an old catalog that listed them at one time.

Dick2, I had an air impact for many years , it broke the hammer works about 20 tears ago and I couldn't buy parts for it then. I think I still have the adapters to 1/2 and 3/4 for it .

from what i have heard they were made exclusively for the government, im not sure if thats true tho. we have a bunch of them that my grandfather had, i dont think they ever made any drive tools, i know that we had a 3/4 ratcher and a 5/8 adaptor in our set, but no 5/8 ratchet or breaker bar

Armstrong used to make them years ago. I'm sure there were other mfg.'s also. We had a few different sizes on the shelf up until about a year ago when the boss decided to throw them away.
Unfortunately I've never seen any of the drive tools for them.

I've still got a bunch of 5/8 impact sockets, and the adapters. Mine are Armstrong. We still have air impact guns 5/8 drive at work..... 40 years old and still going strong! Hydro power station.
