Reversing motor

I have a boat lift that has a worm gear that is driven by a 110 volt reversing motor. This worm gear drives a pinion gear that is connected to a 2 inch pipe. The boat lift cables are wrapped around this pipe. When the motor turns the worm gear, the boat goes up or down. I have taken everything mechanical apart and everything is free and greased. Here is the problem--- When the lift is going down, after about 5 foot, there is a very loud screaming sound, like a siren. The boat is still in the air so load has not changed. The sound is coming from the motor area. It has never made this noise going up. Several of my neighbors have the same type lift and they do the same thing. I have taken the 110 volt (reversing) motor apart and it looks new. I know all this does not make sence but it is true. My question is---can this type motor make this sound in one direction and not the other?

Put a brake on it to apply a load when going down and it will stop screeching...then go to your neighbors and sell them a kit to fix theres and make a buck off of your problem...not a big deal for a machinist. Fred OH

If they all do it, I would say there is no problem. There is a difference when lowering. The weight of the boat is driving the motor and does not take any power from the motor to lower the load. The motor may be overspeeding. What happens if you stop and after awhile lower again. Does it still make the noise. If the motor has sleeve bearings and is a little dry or worn they may be allowing the motor shaft to not spin freely but "bounce around in the bearings). Do not know what the term is.

The problem is the NOISE! I am a machinist and don't see how a pinion gear can turn a worm gear. When it is making the noise, I can stop for any length of time, from a few seconds to 30 minutes and the noise is still there but only down, not up. As I stated, the sleeve bearings look new with no play. I have even took the belt off and ran the motor for 30 minutes, thinking heat could be the problem, when I stopped the motor, it coasted approximately 30 seconds. The noise started back immediatly. I know all of this sounds silly but the noise is so loud I cannot take my boat out late at night. I think I will try to contact the manufactor and see if they have any ideas.

It sounds like some condition is setting up an oscillation in one of the moving drive members. This can happen in plain or sleeve type bearings especially. Does your low speed pipe turn in ball bearings or is it in a wooden bearing. When pulling up, the forces of the worm gear and the load may keep a constant load against the pipe bearing and not allow any stick-slip friction to set up a resonance in the drive components, but when paying downward, the forces would be different and the bearing point may change within the bearing. As mentioned in another post, be sure the proper lubricant is used in the worm gear/wheel set, and check if there are separate greasing locations on the higher speed worm bearings.

This motor probably has a worm gear drive for the winch. Worm gears are VERY sensitive to the lubricant used. Be sure to use only the EXACT lubricant recommended by the manufacturer. Drain the unit and refill with that specific lubricant. The recommended lube might- and probably does- cost much more than similar lubes. Pay the price now or later. If this is not the problem, my apologies.

Thanks for the reply---The motor turns the worm gear by v-belt. The belt is new and tight, and is definately not slipping. The motor is a capacitor start. I can turn the worm drive pulley with one finger, up or down.
