I have for some reason become a collector of cast off air compressor's. Some junk and some useable. I have a couple of older pump's that I believe are good but no info on what direction the things should be turned.(cw or ccw)These are both piston type using oil in the crankcase. Any help out there???

Redid a 5 HP Champion a few years back and because of being rushed, wired it up so that the crank turned backwards. Head kicked out the bearings and the rods in about 6 months. Oil slinger was not getting the oil up to the holes in the rods.

Yes, set it up so that air is pulled through the blades and passes over the pump. Rotation usually isn't critical unless the compressor is pressure lubed and the oil pump is directional (i.e. Quincys). Sometimes they may not unload if they have centrifugal unloaders and they are running backwards, but this is rare.

All ways hook up the motor st that the air is pushed toward the compressor head. Any litature that came with the compressors ususlly stated this. Have hooked up a hundred or so compressors.

If the spokes of the pulley on the compressor are angled as blades of a fan, I am under the impression it should turn so the fan pushes air across the compressor. If the compressor is set with the belts parallel to the wall of a shop with the belts on the shop side and the compressor toward the wall, the air would be pulled from the shop area and pushed toward the wall. If I'm wrong, somebody will let us know.
